Jay-Z To Score The Great Gatsby
99 problems and temp music ain't one

03 January 2013  |  Written by Phil de Semlyen  |  Source: Twitter

One of the most intriguing questions of the movie year has been demystified. Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby has a composer, and it's hip-hop mogul and Glastonbury-conquering popster, Jay-Z. 1920s Long Island just got one louder.

If it looks like a typically off-beam musical choice by the man who brought William Shakespeare and Butthole Surfers together, it's not wholly unexpected. The film's two trailers to date have featured Mr Z's collaboration with Kanye West 'No Church In The Wild' from Watch The Throne.

For the Gatsby score, Jay-Z will be working with producer-singer-songwriter Jeymes Samuel, aka The Bullitts, who recently lent his sound to upcoming Western They Die By Dawn. Check out his Star Wars-inspired single Landspeeder here. Samuel broke the news on his Twitter feed:

Luhrmann's 3D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel is shaping up nicely. No-one wanted to see another polite, Jack Clayton-lite version of the Jazz Age classic shuffle demurely across the big screen and in The Aussie's hands the chances of that are precisely zilch.

The Great Gatsby arrives on May 17.

POSTMODERN or CULTURE CLASH
I totally get him doing what he's always done and mixing modern and classic elements to create a post modern world. that 'sword fight' in the start Romeo + Juliet were amazingly conceived. Gatsbys parties in the roaring 20's were like the raves of their day but from the trailer - the look is 20's abd the sound is 21st century where in Moulin Rogue the look was a mash up of both eras making the music fit better. i hope Baz has made a brilliant cinematic cocktail of ideas instead of a dir More

Armstrong, anyone?
A bit of a lazy news article, this. Since Craig Armstrong was originally (since january 2012, in fact) attached to the project as score composer, what happened here? Either the writer of this article, as do many other journo's then since the story is all over the place, got the term 'score' and 'soundtrack' mixed up and Jay-Z is merely doing original songs for the film, or Craig Armstrong has been placed off the project to be replaced by Mr. Z. Since Armstrong was credited as the sc More
