'80s-Style Wreck-It Ralph Advert Lands
Litwak's Arcade needs you!

09 October 2012  |  Written by Ali Plumb  |  Source: DisneyAnimation YouTube

Following in the footsteps of the purposefully retro (and, alas, fake) Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear commercials for Toy Story 3 in 2010, Wreck-It Ralph's marketing team have devised a new one for Fix-It Felix Jr., the game from the upcoming Disney animation.

Complete with warped film, a slightly shonky sound quality and a superfast voiceover, it's designed to transport viewers back to 1982, the year when Felix-it Felix Jr. and Wreck-It Ralph were the coolest thing in arcade gaming.

Just in case you don't know already, Wreck-It Ralph finds the titular character (voiced by John C. Reilly) bored after decades of doing same job – smashing a building as his game’s villain – and be hated for simply doing what he was programmed to do.

So he decides to hop into other games to try to become a hero. Among the worlds he visits are Hero’s Duty (which features Jane Lynch as a tough-assed sergeant) and candy-coated racing game Sugar Rush, where he meets a chatty “glitch” named Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman). Together, they learn that being an outcast is much easier if you’ve got a friend to share it with.

But there’s little time for schmaltzy bonding as Ralph has also brought something else with him, unbeknownst to our hero. Something very dangerous...

We’re definitely ready to see this one, as it comes loaded with Simpsons / Futurama-level in-jokes thanks to director Rich Moore and also boasts the tonsil talents of Jack McBrayer, Dennis Haysbert, Mindy Kaling and Alan Tudyk. It’ll arrive in the UK on February 15 (and the US on November 2), which seems like an eon away. Especially as the short film arriving with it, Paperman, is a thing of beauty.
