He's played poets and perfumers, fops and rockers, but we've got a feeling the ever-watchable Ben Whishaw's next trick is going to be more explosive than the lot of them. As MI5's resident gadgets man Q in Skyfall, he follows in the beloved footsteps of Desmond Llewelyn, not to mention the shorter-lived legacy of John Cleese: the first appearance of the character in the Daniel Craig era.
Here's a first look at the head of Branch Q, the one-time Armorer Division of Her Majesty's Secret Service, fiddling about with a new device. Judging by the spew of data behind him and the vaguely non-plussed look on 007's face he could be in the middle of one of his too-much-information data dumps on James Bond.
Whishaw certainly seems to be cutting a heck of a dash - 'Brian Cox cool'? - while maintaining that slightly absent-minded air that's always made Q such a favourite of Bond fans. We can't wait to see what he's got up that cardigan sleeve.
Hopefully, Q has been rethought as much as the rest of the franchise. Craig's bond doesn't really have silly gadgets, so I hope that Q is in there because he needs to be there. Serving a purpose, which Q hasn't for many years. Looks like he's been updated to some sort of super hacker. And he looks aloof, like an arrogant Hoxton wanker, which I like. I hope he comes in, kicks some computer-genius ass and then shows Bond how to set up his Tivo before calling him a moron. More

if they wanted richard ayoade why didnt they just hire him?
have to admit, viewing this on a small iPhone, I thought it ]him at first! But to be honest, if we had Ayoade, as good of an actor he is, wouldn't he just be replicating Moss from IT Crowd? Moss in a Bond film? Can't see it. For me, first impressions of Whishaw as Q are so far so good. More

Wrong Brian Cox
Stupidly thought you were referring to the actor Brian Cox and was somewhat puzzled how Whishaw compared to him. Then realised you were referring to the nasal keyboard player from D:Ream. Foolish me. More
He looks exactly how I expected him to look. Which is kind of disappointing, I was hoping for something a little more believable, a bit more geek chic than just flat out, stereotypical nerd. More

Excellent
John Cleese was terrible in his role. Lets hope we get a decent take on the character. Desmond Llewellyn owned that role.
No silly invisible cars, though! More
