Jack Reacher Trailer Drives In
He is not a hero...

03 July 2012  |  Written by James White

submit to reddit

It might have arrived sneakily and distinctly unofficially over the weekend (which does seem in keeping with the antihero’s style, albeit he doesn't usually go for Russian dubbing), but now the first proper teaser trailer for Tom Cruise and Chris McQuarrie’s Jack Reacher is online.

Apart from a decidedly not-from-the-books obsession with cars (at certain points you might think you’re watching a promo for the next Fast & Furious outing), it definitely seems that Cruise is going all out to prove he’s got what it takes to embody Lee Child’s hardnut former military policeman.

Adapted from the book One Shot, Jack Reacher finds the man with an alarm clock in his head digging into the case of a devastating sniper attack in a US city. The prime suspect is a former military sniper who claims innocence and demands Reacher’s services. The case seems like a slam-dunk, but soon Reacher realises there is much more to the whole affair...

With Rosamund Pike, Robert Duvall, Richard Jenkins, Werner Herzog and David Oyelowo also among the cast, Jack Reacher smashes its way into our cinemas on December 28.

For more on the movie, you’ll want to track down a copy of the latest Empire, which is snarling at other magazines in newsagents now. And if you’re digitally inclined, seek it out on the iPad in both UK and US versions.

RE: SIZE DOES MATTER
Is it not fair to say that the character of Jack Reacher is built around his physicality? Casting someone almost a foot shorter than the character as written seems to indicate to me that they aren't really interested in making a proper adaptation, it's more like another Cruise star vehicle. I know studios labour under the assumption that a film must have a star name as the main actor, but would it have been so bad to get someone who fits the physical bill to play the part? There's plenty of act More

Looks pretty terrible, sounds pretty terrible; the description of Reacher "he doesn't care about proof"? Really? He's an investigator and the less said about the Mission Impossible esc music, the better. I was beginning to come around to this movie until I saw that trailer, now I feel a bit ill. And a little insane. But - but but but - the books are books and this is a film. I think if he was a man mountain it would be distracting. And anyway who gives a frak. It'll be good or bad and petulance or boycotting won't affect it. I don’t mind Tom Cruise being too short for playing Jack Reacher. It’s reportedly getting his cult minions to stalk his wife I object to. How can he be seen as a hero when he allegedly acts like that? Who cares about the bloody film? From all accounts it’s a creepy disturbing situation. Who is going to pay to see one of his films anymore anyway? How about Mel Gibson as Batman where the Joker is an ethic minority lol? In my opinion. More

I dont want Jack Reacher films to bomb - it could be an amazing franchise if it was cast correctly. Im also all for a bit of left field casting but little Tom Cruise as Reacher - please spare me. A great book character turned into a joke because apparently Cruise can open a film. first I was horrified. Reacher in the books, looks like Dolph Lundgren. Maybe a bit wider... Then I thought I should aproach this with open mind. Reacher doesn't have to be tall or blonde. He has to be a badass, has to be a very smart guy, has to be hard like he eats rocks with his panckakes for breakfast and uses tabasco sauce for eye drops. If Cruise/McQuarrie manage to convey this, the tallness is a moot point. The one thing I didn't really like was Cruise's voice still sounds too "ni More

This was a movie I was hoping would have never been made if Tom Cruise was involved. It only shows what kind of Napoleon complex Tom the midget Cruise has, to think he can play a character 1 foot taller and 100 lbs heavier than him. Potential of a Stallone / Hugh Jackman / Vin Deisel / Eric Bana vehicle wasted
...Anyone but...It's like casting Cruise as Bond...just doesn't work...he's too 'mummy's Boy Mapother' for the role...if only Burt Reynolds was in his prime...this would of been perfect! More

Good on em
The end fight scene is clearly a dig at all you anti cruise people, they couldn't show him being any shorter if they tried. Highly amusing and respect to the films promoters. Movie looks just fine to me, a bit old school, roadhouse, walking tall esque. Bring it on vrooooom! More

Okay
I see some people here criticising Cruise's choice based on height and weight, which is silly. Of course the character of Reacher in the book has those characteristics but a movie is a different thing. Cruise might not be the most adequate for the role, but then neither did Keanu Reeves for Constantine and the movie turned out pretty decent More

seems okay
i have read every single Reacher novel - and initially hated the idea of Cruise playing him BUT the trailer seems okay - i think i would rather have Cruise playing Reacher if it means that we get to option of going to see the film rather than someone else 'playing" him and the film not getting made - in the end we don't have to go and see it if we really really really can't bear the idea that the central character has been physically changed. My personal choice would have been Liev Schreibe More

RE: LOLLOLOLOLOLOL
Tom Cruise is the perfect fit for Jack Reacher since the character is "is a giant, standing at 6' 5" tall (1.96m) with a 50-inch chest, and weighing between 210 and 250 pounds (100–115 kg)" omeone like Chris Hemsworth would have been a better fit More

LOLLOLOLOLOLOL
Okay I'll admit I know nothing of Jack Reacher except what I have just learnt after a quick read of his wikipedia page; poor driver 6'5" blonde hair This Tom Cruise version just looks like the guy from War of the Worlds with some of the fighting skills of Ethan hunt. Definitely one to miss I think. More
