New Django & Only God Forgives Pictures
Tarantino & Winding Refn's latest

Empire On Location

Update: We now have those Django Unchained images in higher resolution and in stand-alone form, so click below to get a taste of Tarantino’s latest in all its glory.

Empire has had a facelift, and as part of the changes (which we'll be previewing over the next few days) we have a new On Location section, showcasing first looks at the biggest films in production around the world. This month's inaugural selection is chocka with exclusive reports and images, notably from Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained and Nicholas Winding Refn's second collaboration with Ryan Gosling, Only God Forgives. Check them out below!

First of all, Django Unchained. We have new pictures of Jamie Foxx's titular bounty hunter, who's trying to rescue his wife from the clutches of the evil Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio) with the help of Christoph Waltz' German bounty hunter Dr King Schultz. Says Foxx of the film, "When this movie's done, there's gonna be some hot button issues but, given my background, I think I'll be able to get some points across. The one thing that stuck out to me in the script was that Django was married. Back then, to be married was taboo. This is a love story. He's not trying to stop slavery. He's not trying to do anything but find the love of his life - which is like trying to find a needle in a world of haystacks."

After that, we headed to the Bangkok set of Only God Forgives, where Nicolas Winding Refn has reunited with Drive star Ryan Gosling for a tale of revenge and boxing. Gosling's a Miami gangster in Thailand who gets stuck into a grudge match with a former police lieutenant. According to Winding Refn, "The supernatural may figure, as might the existential". Says the director, "It's a stream of consciousness. It's based on real emotions but set in a heightened reality. It's a fairy tale."

Django Unchained is out in January 2013, and Only God Forgives will be out sometime next year. For more on both, as well as word on The Sweeney, Life Of Pi, Rise Of The Guardians and From Rome With Love - and more - check out the On Location section in the new issue of Empire. That would be the Dark Knight Rises issue in print and on iPad from Thursday May 31. Get it while it's hot!
