The Avengers Dominates Global Box Office
Marvel movie smashes records

The Avengers Dominates Global Box Office

Concerns that the combined might of Tony Stark, Cap, Thor and co. would leave international moviegoers cold - and let's be honest, there weren't too many of those - were Hulk-smashed into the middle of next week by Avengers Assemble's first takings. A week prior to its US opening, the movie took a whopping $174.8m globally.

The Marvel blockbuster ended up in top spot in each of its 38 territories. Leading the way was the UK with $24.7m - or £15m for currency sticklers - since Thursday's opening. That's more than the UK lifetime gross of Captain America, Thor or Hulk, just to put that in context. And none of those were flops. In Australia it fist-punched Zac Efron's The Lucky One square on the schnoz and sank Battleship, ending up with a final haul of $19.7m, the second highest ever five-day total.

Interestingly, Avengers Assemble's debut was almost twice that of Iron Man 2, the biggest Avenger opener to date, leading Box Office Mojo to predict final overseas takings north of $600m.

As an interesting footnote - strange as it is to describe the biggest ever box-office smash as a footnote - Titanic 3D picked up an additional $12.5m in China. That's not just a small consolation for the currently embattled Rupert Murdoch, but further confirmation for Hollywood bean-counters of the financial muscle of China's moviegoers. It takes the watery blockbuster's tally there to $126.1. Still no sign of that ruddy diamond, mind.

Not a Surprise
To be honest, it's not that shocking to me, that The Avengers did epicly across the globe. I think it was marketed and hyped up brilliantly. seriously, the clips, the competitions, the merch... from an avid Tweeter I can safely say that my Twitter feed has been cluttered with 'Avengers talk' for the past month. and not all of it from me... I also went to the London premiere, where each Avenger entered the stage individually, the pyrotechnics went crazy, the music boomed and the crowd went wil More

It's great, I predict it'll break a billion.
It's very few films that break the big "Bill" at the box office. I think (and hope) this does. It certainly has the come back factor and the fan base to do so. All praises to Joss Whedon and his team for making a cracking, fun piece of cinema. I will be watching it more than once in the cinema for sure! More

not suprised it's brilliant
saw it today, went for 2D as recommended by empire podcast. superb film, brilliantly made, action and humour in equal mix (spoiler? check out the very very funny scene betweeen Hulk and Loki near the end, as funny as any seen in any comedy film) great effects, balanced screen time for all the characters- Wheedon will finally get the status he deserves! 10/10 More

Really enjoyed Avengers. I thought the effects were some of the best I've seen and the characters were all handled well. Roll on the second one! More

It was sooooo good
Far better than I thought it would be. A great, fun film. Even got a bit of heart and conflict in there too. Can't wait to re-watch it first chance I get. More

Yay!
I'm just excited to see the box office first week for the American release. They are NOT happy and the impatience is reaching fever pitch in some corners of the internet. More worldwide releases with America waiting could be fun in the future... Seems to be working well here. More
