First Image From Lone Ranger Online
Depp and Hammer get pictured...

09 March 2012  |  Written by James White  |  Source: Jerry Bruckheimer

submit to reddit

Finally emerging from a mammoth, troubled development that saw it shut down at least once while the budget was hacked back to an affordable number for Disney's accountants to approve, The Lone Ranger is now shooting. Uber-producer Jerry Bruckheimer has now tweeted the first picture of Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer in costume as Tonto and John Reid, which you can see below.

Yes, director Gore Verbinski and his team have decided to push a distinctly gothic feel to the Ranger, which ends up (partly thanks to Depp’s presence) looking a little like Tim Burton’s The Lone Ranger. Of course, we’ll have to see and hear Depp’s interpretation of the role to find out if this new take on Tonto works, but it’s certainly distinctive.

Our heroes will be going up against the fiendish Butch Cavendish (William Fichtner) and his gang as they battle to maintain justice as part of their adventures. And then, one assumes, go on to a very strange party…

The Lone Ranger also features Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Wilkinson, James Badge Dale, Barry Pepper, Ruth Wilson and James Frain. It plans to giddy up into our cinemas on May 31, 2013.

While i know thats the classic style for the Ranger, it does look a bit cheap and/or boring next to Depps "souped up" version of Tonto. I like the look of the Ranger but yeah, next to Depp its very contrary. Mabey thats the point.. I'll see it. More

L: Woger Wow. Reminds me of The Simpsons episode where they're at the cinema and Lisa complains about inaccuracies in some period pice and Bart tells her to keep quiet because the ninja's are coming. Anyway, I was hoping this would't be the worlds oldest hipster playing Jack Sparrow again but I shouldn't have hoped. I used to love Depp, but his by the numbers brand of 'wackiness' is wearing thin, and this sort of Bruckheimer bombast isn't what I am looking for from my westerns. E More

Captain Jackish. Seeing as who's producing, I'm sure there'll be a fair bit of past-successes getting recycled. Also, I remember Depp saying he was going to be doing something that would be respectful to his heritage...I know it's one photo but I'm sensing a turn from the Mickey Rooney school of foreign stereotypes. RE: Come now Empire readers - you are behaving like AICN trolls
I'd have thought the odd Saville Row type crispness of Hammer's costume was more the issue - I can't really see anything wrong with Depp's. But Lone Ranger and werewolves sounds like the same idiot thought process that matches columns together to get Cowboys and Aliens, period pieces and zombies and possibly Lincoln and vampires. With a director who couldn't see what was going wrong with his POTC series and the bad writers who helped him drag them down. It's fair to say criticising based More

Come now Empire readers - you are behaving like AICN trolls
slamming a movie just a few days in production based on one photo. Why not do a bit of research into the culture of the Indian tribes that Depp is representing. Or do you think that Indians all wore buckskins and said "um" and "how" all the time. Obviously the filmmaker are avoiding the campiness of previous Lone Ranger outings by changing the costumes - in particular the blue shirt and white trousers that were made from the same material as the Mexican peasant costumes More

With Clayton Moore and the peerless Jay Silverheels (purely for the name alone, the man was a GOD). And I even had the action figures! And I'm wondering what music they'll have... Will it be the William Tell Overture of old? Or will they opt for a new take? Like the new look and thankfully the Ranger isn't in his old style powder blue duds. Depp? Lone ranger looks great (camp as hell, but in a great way)...
I'm sure Tonto will also be great...I'm slightly worried that Depp's going to be too Deppish...much as I love him...we don't just want a repeat of everything he's ever done...once more with pale make up and eccentrics...But, like I said, I'm sure he will be great. More
