The Dark Knight Rises Trailer Arrives
Bane steps out of the shadows

20 December 2011  |  Written by Phil de Semlyen

submit to reddit

Christmas has come early in the caped form of The Dark Knight Rises trailer. If anything it's a little more understated than we were expecting, but no less awesome for it. Here's a movie franchise that knows what it's about and doesn't need to bang the drum too hard to get us seriously excited. Click here to watch it in full below, then tell us what you think in the usual spot.

Aside from a checklist of Dark Knighters, from Caine to Oldman, and a set piece that will have the NFL checking its insurance policy, the trailer is notable for plunging us into the full glare of the sun. Christopher Nolan has promised to move the final part of the trilogy out of the shadows and into the light, and he's made good on that. As he tells Empire in the new issue: "The jumping off point for taking on Batman in the first place was that if you could make people believe in the reality of what they're seeing, then the story just has unbelievable power."

See for youself when The Dark Knight Rises arrives in cinemas and on IMAX on July 20. See Empire's new issue for a whole lot more on the movie and 2012's other blockbusters, and read our trailer breakdown of this promo here.

Judging by the trailer, I can say that this movie is going to be one of the best Batman movie yet. I mean, judging from the first two movies, it really was that good. Just like the time when The Dark Knight was still in the talks, especially when it was announced that Heath Ledger was going to play The Joker, many were disappointed that he'll be playing the role but then it proved everyone wrong. Heath did a very awesome job on nailing the Joker role and he even got a posthumous Oscar for More

Impatient.
Intense. Chilling. Epic. I absolutely cannot wait to see this movie in theaters. Christopher Nolan has done an amazing job in this series, it's a shame to see it end, but it most certainly needs to sooner than later. I have been on edge, awaiting to see the direction they go with the well-known storyline of Batman and Bane throughout the comic series. More

Catwoman
I do like Anne Hathaway but I'm just not convinced in her portrayal of Catwoman here. I realise it's only a few seconds but I always thought Catwoman had a bit more edge. Anyway only June will tell - bring on The Dark Knight! More

RE: Looking forward to Empire's breakdown of this trailer.
L: benskelly I think taking Batman out of the darkness of night is kind of taking away what makes the character special. It would be like casting some fugly classless thug as James Bond. Wait a minute... t's something that was foreshadowed in TDK: The Joker took the piss out of the crooks for having their 'therapy sessions' in broad daylight in order to avoid Batman. Batman uses the darkness to his advantage, but what is he supposed to do if the crimes are happening in broad daylight More

It can't end here - can it?
The best cast Batman ever! The best cast villains ever! Why leave it here? Surely there's much more mileage in these characters and all of the others that made up the Batman legend. There is still the appearance of Robin to cover. Why leave the story part told? More

I've been all of Nolan's films (minus Following) and never once been disappointed, he definitely now replaces Cameron as my favourite writer/filmmaker. oes that mean you'll replace your current avatar with one of Bale suiting up as Batman? What a fantastic trailer. Way to really put the tease on Nolan ntrigued as to what Harvey Dent and his doings will play into the plot. The picture in the latest Empire magazine of Bane holding up a picture of him and then a couple of more pictures of Harvey in this trailer. I really like the trailer. I like that fact that it isn't showing you a brief overview of the entire film, something that so many trailers do nowadays that in some cases you don't even need to bother seeing the finished product. The trailer gives out enough information to hook and have you asking questions, which is more than fine by me; it means I'll be able to watch the movie without having already second guessed all of it and the imagery is new and fresh. Bane is the storm (or at least one facet of it) and he is gonna knock Batman on his arse so bad he'll be in a position to apparently say to Bruce, after unmasking him, ie removing the theatricality Bruce relies on, ie the costume that provides his symbol/legend with its power, when Gotham is ashes, you have my permission to die.
