Brave Trailer Strides In
Pixar's new adventure

17 November 2011  |  Written by James White

After a stumble in terms of critical reaction with Cars 2 (if not box office, which hummed along nicely), Pixar looks to be solidly back on mesmerising, funny, emotional and visually outstanding form with Brave. We brought you some exclusive new images from the movie just a couple of days ago and now the first full trailer has arrived online.

Brave follows hot-headed tomboy Merida (Kelly Macdonald), a skilled archer and the daughter of King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). Fiercely determined to figure out her own path in life, she defies an ancient custom, which in turn has terrible consequences for her family and its kingdom.

So Merida turns to an eccentric old wise woman (Julie Walters) in her quest to make things right. But can she restore order from the chaos?

With a largely Scottish cast that also includes Robbie Coltrane, Kevin McKidd and Craig Ferguson, Brave is Pixar dipping a toe in fairytale territory for the first time. And from the looks of this, pulling it off with style.

Brave will be out on August 17.

L: Spaldron L: AyannaNyx Wel I guess 'free' and 'brave' are used because Scotland is often called 'Land of the free' or 'land of the brave'. Just because Gibbo spouted it in his trifle of a film, doesn't mean he was the first to connect those words with Scotland..... b] sm=happy07.gif]py07.gif]py07.gif]py07.gif]ngry noob is angry. I've got to say, her hair gives me goosebumps, especially in the first storytelling scene... I'd hate to see the hours the animators put into working all that out! More

Its set in medieval Scotland, is called 'Brave' and the word "Freedom" is used at least twice in the trailer. Hmmmmmmmmmm, where have I seen this before? More

Erm, what's it actually about?
Is there a story here? Looks less-than-impressive to me. My kids are far from excited. Toy Story 4 anyone? As for the accents, Kelly Macdonald and Big Billy have been plying their trades in the states for years. You don't do that if they can't understand your lilt. More

@ kumar: I had no problem understanding it whatsoever and I'm Dutch. One would think then that it's really no problem for an American audience. More

A lack of class and an over familiar plot was what I got from it myself. Trailers mean almost nothing of course and it looks pretty. More

Promising
Not so sure if the Scots will like being depicted as drunk, ugly men who yearn for a scrap but it looks decent enough. Hope the slapstick element (woman runs into wooden post) is toned down and the clever comedy (the wimpy son hiding behind the brute) a bit more prevalent. More

I thought Cars 2 was ok. The natural elements of Brave look wonderful, but I'm less impressed by the human characters. More
