Michael Shannon Is Superman's Zod
Zack Snyder picks a nemesis...

11 April 2011  |  Written by James White  |  Source: Heat Vision blog

Zack Snyder has his hero in Henry Cavill as Superman. Now he’s also found a villain and we couldn’t be happier with the choice: Michael Shannon will play General Zod.

The rumours about the Super-villain have been flying thick and fast, with claims and counter-claims about whether the character, so memorably portrayed by Terence “Kneel before Zod!” Stamp in the Richard Donner/Richard Lester Superman films, would even be appearing in the new movie. Then talk shifted to who might play him, with Viggo Mortensen in the frame as a likely villain.

Now, though, Shannon – who has more than proved himself in work as diverse as Revolutionary Road, The Runaways, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, Werner Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant and, on the small screen as the creepy driven Agent Van Alden in Boardwalk Empire – is Snyder’s man for the job.

"Zod is not only one of Superman's most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don't. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role," Snyder said in a release picked up by the Heat Vision blog.

That insight, of course, stems from the fact that Zod is a fellow Kryptonian with similar powers to Supes, albeit with a twisted, bitter heart instead of an incessant need to do good.

Shannon’s Zod will be seen alongside Lois Lane (Amy Adams) and Ma and Pa Kent (Diane Lane and Kevin Costner). With a script from David S Goyer and producing assistance from Chris Nolan and Emma Thomas, Snyder gets started on the movie in August for a December 2012 release date.

RE: Oh Zod! Nooooo!
Shannon good looking - lol !!!!   L: waltham1979 Not convinced about the casting myself; personally I would have preferred an older cast to this film in general and don't even get me started on Amy Adams as Lane. Thought Snyder was a great choice of director, but doubts are starting to creep in. I really wanted this film to have a real 'epic' quality to it that I felt Superman Returns lacked and I am just not getting it off these choices, they all just seem a little too good More

RE: Boardwalk Empire Spoiler
respect, if you had a Brit as Zod, it's just recreating what Terrence Stamp has done before. You should watch Shannon in BUG (that may change your mind, lol!) More

RE: Boardwalk Empire Spoiler
I think they should have stuck to someone British for Zod. No one can do evil like the Brits can! Except maybe the French and Germans. *running to hide in Canada.*  ;) More

RE: Oh Zod! Nooooo!
I really like Shannon it's just that I would've liked to see one of the other villans in the film as apart from Luthor (naturally) none of the other main villans have been used. More

RE: Oh Zod! Nooooo!
Hmm I'm starting to get mildly optimistic about this film. Some left-field (but quite clever) casting, Snyder leaving the script to more capable hands... This could turn out to be something rather exciting. More

RE: This super hero flick
Shaping up nicely! Would've preffered to see Viggo as Zod as was rumoured - but Shannon is a solid choice and is all kinds of awesome in Boardwalk Empire!! More

RE: Would have been better as Non
I do like Michael Shannon, but I can't help but think he would have been better as the Kryptonian Non, who is "as without thought as he is without voice." He is a very physical actor and I've always seen Zod as someone more wily and intellectually terrifying than physically imposing. Still, it's great casting. More

RE:
Zod's been done a lot before? As someone who got bored to death with Wooden Welling's Smallville at around Season 4, I can honestly say I've seen Zod portrayed on screen just ONCE. Once, and that was 20 odd years ago.ink what people's actual concern is, is that they're doing Superman 2 all over again, just as Returns was quite a lot like the original Superman movie. I don't think that'll be the case, and other than having Zod as the villian I doubt it'll follow much, if any, of Superman 2's More
