The Hobbit Starts Shooting Today
And two Dwarf Kings have been cast...

20 March 2011  |  Written by James White  |  Source: Heat Vision Blog

Given all the obstacles in their way up until now, you might, like many of us, have become unwilling to accept that the two Hobbit movies would actually exist until Peter Jackson physical strode on set to start shooting them. Good news, then: the production kicks off today!

Relatively speaking, of course – they’re kicking off in New Zealand, so calculating for time differences (checks sun dial, realises that’s a stupid idea), they started cranking the cameras either this morning, last night, tomorrow or sometime in a parallel dimension. But all kidding aside, things are finally, really moving on this monster.

The cast, including Martin Freeman as Bilbo, Dwarves Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield), Ken Stott (Balin), Graham McTavish (Dwalin), William Kircher (Bifur), James Nesbitt (Bofur), Stephen Hunter (Bombur), Rob Kazinsky (Fili), Aidan Turner (Kili), Peter Hambleton (Gloin), John Callen (Oin), Jed Brophy (Nori), Mark Hadlow (Dori) and Adam Brown (Ori), plus Ian McKellen’s Gandalf, have been in place for a couple of months now, getting ready for their various roles. And waiting for Jackson to overcome surgery for a perforated stomach ulcer.

There’s more - Heat Vision Blog’s story mentions that two other cast members have signed on, with New Zealand actors Jeffrey Thomas and Mike Mizrahi joining up as Dwarf Kings Thror and Thrain. And Warner Bros. has finally officially confirmed the casting of Cate Blanchett (Galadriel), Elijah Wood (Frodo) and Andy Serkis (Gollum), even if we’ve all known they’d be part of the film for ages.

Intended as two 3D movies to be released in late 2012 and 2013, the Hobbit will film at Wellington’s Stone Street Studios, as well as several locations around the country. Many of the LOTR team are, somewhat naturally back, including cinematographer Andrew Lesnie, composer Howard Shore, concept artists Alan Lee and John Howe and Oscar-winning bigature enthusiast Richard Taylor.

And, to mark the occasion, Jackson posted two images of himself hanging out in the newly reconstructed Bag End to his Facebook page, which you can check out below.

Just to give these pictures a bit of context, here's Mr. Jackson one more time, but back in the days of Fellowship Of The Ring in 2001. A whole decade... doesn't time fly when you're making Oscar-winning fantasy epics, eh?

3D = no viewings for me.
Really, really frustrated and disappointed that they're filming in 3D, as that medium gives me migraines and has so far done nothing for any of the films I've seen use it. The Hobbit doesn't need fancy effects beyond those that enable the story to be told and the world to be created. Anything more is redundant, short-sighted and foolish. I saw FotR something like 16 times at the cinema. Unless I can get to a 2D viewing, I won't be watching this at all. More

RE: http://www.fullmalls.com/
Christ, what happened to this thread? It started out OK, before being hijacked by double-posting pessimistic idiots and the inevitable clothing spammers!   Back on topic: while I'm excited that Hobbit filming has finally begun, I'm indifferent to the fact that it'll be in 3D. We all know this is just a transparent money-milking measure for the studios, so there's no point in retreading this. It's also a bit depressing to know that the first film is still basically a year and a half awa More

And now its finally being madeo be honest I don't really care anymore, I bet something bad will happen down the line which will stop filming like Peter Jackson dies or something.t going to read any more about the production of the hobbit until it is released. Which will probably be at the end of middle earth: p ou're a massive tw*t. More

@Gigolo Joe RE: 3D & cinema
L: Gigolo Joe They'll never admit it but these people are literally killing the cinema! This sort of thing leaves me cold and I haven't been to any cinema since. r thought it would come to this but I now enjoy watching films at home moree doesn't seem any point to cinemas any more. They're all homogenized chain multiplexes, the managers don't even try, the staff don't give a shit, but the real killer is digital projection and 3D. watching exactly the same image - or worse - as I c More

RE: Shrinking Jackson
There were two sets in LOTR a human scale and hobbit scale. Chances are the same will apply here, PJ just decided to be pictured in the human scale one. More

RE: 3d movies? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Even worse for 3D haters - The Vue cinema in Islington (normally good quality screens) has recently been projecting a really noticeable colour fringe to every edge on screen in 2D. It looks like looking at a 3D image without your glasses but much less extreme. This totally ruined when I saw Inception for the 1st time - enough to make me walk out and complain to the manager. This guy took it really personally any suggestion there was anything wrong and refused to take a look. He kept say More
