Diane Lane Is Superman's Martha Kent
She'll be his adoptive mum...

03 March 2011  |  Written by James White  |  Source: Deadline

Like a supervillain monologuing their eeevil plan, the team making the new Superman film have clearly decided to drip-feed the information about casting decisions to keep us thinking about it. The latest update? Diane Lane has signed on to play Supes’ adoptive human mother, Martha Kent.

Martha, as you’ll likely know, is the one maternal figure that Clark Kent/Superman has in his life since his birth mother perished along with dad Jor-El and the rest of Krypton. She’s the wife of Jonathan Kent and one of the big guiding influences in the Man of Steel’s life.

“This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman,” director Zack Snyder said in a press release. “We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”

Lane’s casting would seem to help the case that Kevin Costner may be in line to play Jonathan, though his involvement remains mostly a rumour. And she certainly shows that this film is going to be a younger Supes, what with Lane being a long way from the white-haired granny-type we've seen before. Henry Cavill is busy getting into shape to slip into the super suit for the titular role and Snyder is scheduled to kick off shooting this August, with the movie set for a December 2012 release.

Not too young
Diane Lane is 46, Cavill is 27, so he came to them when she was 19 if you take that as fact, give or take a few hollywood years from them both and he could easily have arrived to the Kents when they were in their mid twenties, No Problem!! More

too young, too HOT
Diane Lane as Martha Kent to Cavill's Supes will make this film to be more like those "moms" from the tv shows, like The O.C., Gossip Girl, or One Tree Hill, where they all have these grown up looking teens WHILE they still look like in their mid to late 30's or very early 40's. And this is...while i LOVE Diane...it's just a wrong decision. Especially, if Costner turns out to actually playing Jonathan Kent, they should just automatically hire SUSAN SARANDON and have a Bull Durham reun More

fantastic
i love this casting choice. and i love that they're going with a younger actress to play martha. annette o'tool has been go great on smallville over the years. having a mother that's younger, but just couldn't get pregnant herself, really helped the story. i like the fact that snyder and nolan are using the same approach. RE: Yep....
ay too young to be playing this kind of role, unless all her scenes are flashback with Clark as a seven or eight year old say, if she's playing Martha as Henry Cavill's mum stage then they are doing her a massive dis-service, unles sthey age her 'up' by about twenty years. More
