Anne Hathaway Is Catwoman
Tom Hardy is the Bane of Batman's life

19 January 2011  |  Written by Chris Hewitt  |  Source: The LA Times

submit to reddit

Well, that settles that, then. Warner Bros. has just announced that Anne Hathaway has won the race to star in The Dark Knight Rises... as Selina Kyle. Also known as Catwoman. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story," said director Christopher Nolan in a press release.

And, in the same release, WB and Christopher Nolan confirmed that the role Tom Hardy will play in the eagerly-awaited Batman threequel is Bane, the muscle-bound super-steroidal freak who, in the comics, once broke Batman's back. “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”

This represents a flood of information for a Christopher Nolan Bat-movie, and gives us plenty to chew on. We can't wait to see Nolan's take on the twisted relationship between Batman and the capricious Cat - and Hathaway certainly has the chops, and the curves, to fill out the catsuit. Intriguingly, Catwoman isn't mentioned in the WB press release, but with Nolan openly admitting that this is the end of his Bat-tale, it's hard to imagine that Kyle won't become Catwoman at some point in the film.

Still, heck of a year for Hathaway, what with this and her gig hosting the Oscars...

Bane is more interesting. Once again, Nolan is going down the multiple villains route - as he did with Scarecrow and Ra's Al Ghul in Batman Begins, and The Joker and Two-Face in The Dark Knight. But we're intrigued by what he and the magnificent Hardy will bring to the role of Bane, a character who could be laughable in the wrong hands (see Batman & Robin for proof). Will this Bane be more cerebral than the grunting hulk of Schumacherville? Or will he represent the first very real physical threat to Christian Bale's Bat in the trilogy?

Update: As some have pointed out, Bane in the comics is far from a grunting hulk, but a schemer who just happens to have more muscles than your average issue of Men's Health. So, when it comes to battling The Bat, he could have the perfect combination of brains and brawn...

So, what do you think? Happy with these choices? Has the Caped Crusader got enough on his plate with Catwoman and Bane to contend with, or does Nolan have another villainous surprise up his sleeve?

The Dark Knight Rises is out on July 20, 2012.

What has gone wrong with C.Nolan?
I think Batman will play second fiddle to Catwoman. What is Nolan doing? Demoting Bale from Dark Knight to Batman? All attention will be on Anne Hathway and will be a mess! More

Believe in the Nolans
Don't forget the onslaught we had when it was announced Heath ledger was starring as the Joker. Not a great reception and look how that turned out. Even the Jack Nicholson fans couldn't dispute the take on the character. Every faith should invested in Nolan's decision with Hathaway and shouldn't be judged on past projects. Lets see how she fairs before making a judgement on whether shes right for the role or not. More

RE: Best Choice?
L: emperorob17 and I think Catwoman could be good but in all the films I have seen with Anne Hathaway, there isn't an edge to the character, simply a nice sweet person which wouldn't suit Catwoman.] I think that's where the 'acting' side of it will come in.ow what you mean though, most of her past roles wouldn't indicate that she's 100% suitable. But this is the same ole argument that was floating around when Ledger was cast as the Joker. And he managed to pull off 'totally insan More

Anne Hathaway will be sexy in a catsuit and a very good actress. She is not necessarily a nemesis of Batman but it is love hate relationship with her also as a cat burgler. The Riddler would be too close to the Joker to be done in the Nolanworld. More

Bit late to the party ted watching 'The Take' last night to get a glimpse of the other stuff Hardy's been in. And fucking hell he's great in it. I found him slightly bland in Inception and couldn't see what the big deal was about, but I've now quickly seen the error of my ways. I've only watched 2 out of 4 of the episodes, but he pulls off the 'utter bastard' role brilliantly, the rape scene in particular (for a TV broadcast) was very disturbing, but soo well acted by Hardy. Excellent cast choices. Im not sure about Catwoman the character, though- I just cant see a Catwoman character prancing about Gotham City... someone mentioned elsewhere about Anne playing just Selina Kyle- I could live with that. I remember saying aaaaages back I would enjoy seeing Bane done really well and as such, I am very excited for that. Nolan has produced Gem after Gem with nothing but class, he could have cast whoever he wanted and I still would go to see it. More

TOO NICE! You obviously didn't see Rachel Getting Married then cos she was anything but nice in that film. I'm being picky but it's good to see someone with the right hair colour playing the role this time (I know the woman from the original Adam West film also had the proper colour) just wondering will she or Nolan have the bottle to have her hair short like in the comics? Remember when Ledger and Eckhart were cast? People were stunned and disappointed. I'm sure Miss Hathaway will be great in the role and it'll be good to see her tackle a role with a little bit more bite to it. She's certainly an excellent actress and has the body to pull off Catwoman. She's always been a bit cutsey-cutsey girl next door but I think this will work in her favour as she can subvert people's expectations. Re: Tom Hardy - perfect choice. I think Bane is a good choice, he was brought up in a prison and learned how to fight there, which sort of mimics Bruce Wayne in Batman begins. But more importantly he matches Batman in intellect and in strength. I reckon Bane will come in with a bit of back story unlike the joker but we will have it handed to us as batman does a bit of detective work. But Bane will surface as the undergorund boss filling hte void left after dark knight. AS for catwoman i imagine he will either do year one or More

Why all the negative comments? Anne Hathaway is a very good actress. As far I am aware casting still happens in movies and judging by how good the casting choices have been in the past two movies I reckon we will be on to another winner here.
