Batman 3 Has A Title
And you can cross off the Riddler

27 October 2010  |  Written by Sam Toy  |  Source: Hero Complex

submit to reddit

Big news from the Batman camp in today’s L.A. Times: Christopher Nolan has revealed the name of the third film in his Gotham City trilogy. In July 2012, we’ll be queuing for The Dark Knight Rises.

Not only that, but in something of a bombshell, Nolan went on to dispell what many had begun to assume to be a given – “It won’t be the Riddler,” reports L.A.T.’s blog Hero Complex. So easy to get ahead of yourself, isn't it? Of course, true to form, the director wouldn’t reveal who it would be.

What Nolan seemed most interested in imparting was that he’s convinced Warner Bros. to keep telling his story in 2D, and to continue down the path of hi-def IMAX sequences. And he’ll get no argument from us on the subject – if it ain't broke, etc.

The post contains one other potentially juicy, enigmatic Nolan quote: “We’ll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we’ll be introducing some new ones.” From here, you can go down two schools of thought – 1) This is a straightforward, non-commital comment. 2) You can subscribe to the oft-chanted mantra that "In comic books, no-one is ever really dead" – and we lost two big characters in The Dark Knight. But then again, of course, that doesn’t – to date – really wash with the realistic leanings of the first two films. What was that about getting ahead of ourselves? Pah! Tish! Etc.!

RE: Black Mask or Hush
Bane could NEVER be a goon again, not after what Joel Schumacher did to him in Batman & Robin! How can they even think of  making Bane a goon, when he's the only villain to be able to beat the sh*t out of Batman single handedly in hand-to-hand combat, breaking his back AND his spirit to keep on fighting crime. He's physically stronger than Batman, with or without the Venom. He's quite possible smarter than him too, as he was able to deduce within a year that Batman was Bruce Wayne More

Batman 3
I'm certain that Nolan will include a well known villain in the final film, but as to who that is, is puzzling me. There aren't that many left (mainstream villains I mean). Catwoman is a villain you hear cropping up all the time on forums and in general conversation I have with mates, but then nobody seem to agree that the character would fit in with Nolan's universe. I just can't see the relevance of the character, or even the realism of the character in Nolan's world. But, no matter More

RE: last film? Villain?
L: The Great Danton one question: is Batman Rises the last film of the Nolan series? What about the penguin, could he play the villain? and harvey Quin? font="trebuchet ms"]1) We believe so 2) Could work with Cobblepot, if portayed as grimey crime boss 3) Harley Quinn - a very difficult character to place into this world and the connection with the Joker, without the Joker being in TDKR would be really tough to connect with. RE: Batman
The title has arisen sorry pun from what happened at the end of the last film eg he began  Batman proper at the end of the film and was titled The Dark Knight at the end The Dark Knight. Although he was it in the film. He has to RISE in the next film because at the end of the last one he went down to take the fall instead of Harvey Dent. Christopher Nolan has discounted The Riddler, Joker, Harvey Dent, Mr Freeze, Poison Ivy. Mr guess is Catwoman is still open and Marion Coutillard More

I'm personally voting for Dr Hugo Strange as the main villain, with a smaller Zsasz-like appearance from Killer Croc (see 'Joker' or Waylon Jones' original appearance) and a proper Catwoman. Maybe Talia. Not sure about the title given they now seem to have just replaced the traditional titular 'Batman' with 'The Dark Knight' (is the next one going to be 'The Dark Knight Forever'?), and it does seem a shameless way of saying 'The Dark Knight 2' or 'sequel to the Batman film that made us ove More

RE: Not sure on the title, but wanna be.
I would happy to see Two-Face return simply because it would be very special to see a whole film with him at the height of his criminal powers (In TDK he was just a man with a gun). The Dark Knight vs. The White Knight with all of Gotham to play for would feel appropriate given their history. Probably won't be, though. More

RE: Not sure on the title, but wanna be.
Although I don't think Two Face will return (Nolan and Eckhart have both publicly stated he's dead) at the end of TDK he didn't look any more dead than Gordon half way through the film. There were no visible mortal wounds, we saw no body in the coffin and noone checking the body. As I say, don't think they'll bring him back, but if they did it doesn't have to be a back from the dead story. More

Clearlinkssteve, around the time of Batman Begins release, Nolan and Bale stated pretty definitively in a lot of interviews that they don't see Robin being incorporated into the world they have established. Also The Dark Knight returns is so far from what's occurred in the first two films I can't see him bringing in the mutants, Robin or recasting the Joker. Batman of the Dark Knight returns is a bitter ultra violent mean old bastard and a killer. His psyche is pretty ugly and distorted from wh More

'The Dark Knight Rises'??? Sounds like some blaxploitation porno. Perhaps Tom Hardy is going to be a tranny Catwoman and Samual L. Jackson is planning to grow a handlebar moustache and play the part of Robin as a dominant/submissive S&M enthusiast. Although my guess is Nolan will get Ellen Page in as Robin and cherry pick the good bits from Miller's 'Dark Knight Returns'. In fact I reckon it will be a loose adaptation of 'Dark Knight Returns'. I'm not keen on the title. Obviously it won't impact the quality of the film but what excited me when The Dark Knight was announced as a title was that it was a direct comics reference and sounded cool. The addition of the word Rises just does nothing for me and seems like a way just to remind everyone it's a sequel to The Dark Knight, where Batman Begins and The Dark Knight seemed to resonate with the content in a cool sounding way.
