Sony Finally Tracks Down The Lost Symbol
Surprise! They've got a writer

04 February 2010  |  Written by James White  |  Source: Variety

We've known it was coming ever since the book was announced, but now it's official: Sony has decided to ignore the diminishing returns of Angels And Demons and hired writer Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things) to adapt Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol.

Yes, despite Angels' $486 million haul falling well short of The Da Vinci Code's $758 million worldwide takings, the studio believes there's still life in Tom Hanks' Professor Robert Langdon, his hair and his middle distance stare.

That's assuming, of course, that Hanks signs (he hasn't set a deal yet), but you can bet that Sony will be delivering a hefty pay offer to his house as soon as the bank opens.

The book, meanwhile, proved to be yet another massive bestseller for Brown, and finds the good prof called to Washington to figure out the symbology of the Freemasons. Dark historical secrets will no doubt be revealed with his life under blah blah the usual.

We're betting Hanks and Ron Howard will be aboard soon enough and Sony will want this one out in the world by 2012 at the latest.

Tom Hanks?
i think that they should ditch Tom Hanks and get Owen Wilson to play the role or Robert Langdon. More

hmmm
well i hated da vinci, but in all honesty i didn't think angels and deamons was awful. having never read the book i found the plot quite exciting - even if you could see the final baddie a million miles away. So yeh i'll await this one with an open mind. But hanks dude sort the hair out! More

Mark Strong as the bad guy
Anyone who's read the book must agree that the description of the bad guy is right on the money for Mark Strong. Seeing him in Sherlock Holmes just confirms this all the more. I couldn't picture anyone else doing it... More

Good luck with that...
This is going to be so, so bad. The first two films were woeful, even though they were based on bloody entertaining books, especially with Angels and Demons. But The Lost Symbol is an over long, flat, self indulgent bore of a book. If we follow the pattern of the books being streets better than the films, we could well be looking at a new entry in the higher realms of your top 50 terrible films. More

Wuhu
Finally, I almost thought they wouldn't make that movie ... oh, wait. It's that Dan Brown thing. There was no doubt, now was there? First two sucked doonkey balls, only two movies Tom Hanks every sucked in (and not just a little bit), so please, spare me! More
