The Green Lantern Is...
Cooper, Reynolds or... Timberlake?!?

10 July 2009  |  Written by Chris Hewitt  |  Source: The Hollywood Reporter

submit to reddit

Can you feel it? The excitement rippling the air? It’s got nothing to do with The Ashes – two days in and the bloody Aussies are already running away with it – but the fact that Warner Bros. and Martin Campbell are about to choose the lucky guy who will be their Green Lantern.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a casting search that has spanned five months and countless actors, including Michael Fassbender, Jared Leto and Henry Cavill, aka the unluckiest bastard in Hollywood*, Campbell and producers Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti have narrowed it down to the following three gentlemen: Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds and, erm, Justin Timberlake.

Yes, Justin Timberlake.

The singing guy. The Sexyback bloke.

The fella who was in The Love Guru.

Justin Timberlake.

In fact, some reports are even claiming that Timberlake may be the favourite, which would knock us for a six and then some. Now, let’s get one thing perfectly straight: we are not deriding Justin Timberlake. He’s a perfectly talented fella, we liked that song about the river, and he’s always seemed like a good egg.

But as an actor, his talents seem much more suited to comedy. The Love Guru aside (and he actually came out of that sorry mess with his reputation and dignity intact), he kills whenever he hosts Saturday Night Live, and his collaborations with the Lonely Island guys (Dick In A Box etc.) suggest that inside the R&B superstar is a frustrated Steve Martin just aching to burst out.

So the idea that we might see him suit up, mask up and slip the supremely powerful ring of the Green Lantern Corps onto the finger of Hal Jordan is one that’s taking a wee bit of time to get used to.

Not so much with Cooper, who’s been linked with the role for ages, and Reynolds, who’s rapidly become the go-to guy for superheroes. He was Hannibal King in Blade: Trinity, he was Deadpool for about 2 minutes, 39 seconds in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, he’s been linked with The Flash for aaaaaaaaages and we wouldn’t be at all surprised to find that there were plans afoot to digitally insert him into Spider-Man.

If Reynolds is the guy given the nod, he’s going to have to find a way to balance his Green Lantern duties with his commitment to playing Wade Wilson/Deadpool again in the mooted Wolverine spin-off. Of course, Green Lantern is nearly ready to go, with sets constructed in Sydney, while Deadpool is a ways off yet. But whether Reynolds may feel that he’s all superheroed out remains to be seen.

At the moment, as well, there’s the consideration that Cooper is just coming off The Hangover, and is Hansel hot right now. But he’s also committed to Joe Carnahan’s The A-Team, which starts filming next month. Can he squeeze both in?

Hmm... Is it us, or does it seem like the path to Timberlake is being cleared?

Whatever Campbell and co. decide, they’ve got to do it fast, for holding deals with all three actors expired on Monday, allowing them to take on new projects while giving Green Lantern a green, glowing middle finger. So, readers, who would you prefer?

Green Lantern, the first big DC superhero flick not to feature Batman or Superman (Watchmen doesn’t quite count, as it’s not part of the established DC Universe), is set for release in December of next year.

 * Missed out on Batman, and Superman, and Bond by inches, apparently. We still love him though!

not Reynolds, Not Timberlake...
Out of the threee named it has to be Cooper, Timberlake would be silly, just plain silly, and Reynolds would be good but im hoping they cast Reynolds as the Flash, he cant be both otherwise what would happen if they decided to do Justice League movie. Cooper is the choice. out of the three. personally i agree with whoever mentioned Nathan Fillion. More

I Vote Ryan!!
For me it has to be Ryan Reynolds! Cooper would be fine 2nd choice for me, but JT, hmmm not sure on that, never seen him act but think hes way too young for Hal Jordan, the other 2 are about the right age. I holdin out for RR, cant wait to see this flick! More

for me it can only be ryan reynolds - after watching the hangover yeh i fell in love with bradley cooper as an actor but i cannot see him as the green lantern. reynolds having done wolverine, blade, smokin aces you can see him as the fighting sorta guy way more than timberlake (????) or cooper More

Timberlake can act
How can you say Justin Timberlake can't act? In the Empire review of Alpha Dog, you said one of the best things about it was Timberlake showing that he can act, holding his own in difficult scenes. I say give him a chance, he's shown he can act before, let's see what he can do. More

Who the fuck is Hawkeye?!   Anyway, if Fillion doesn't get the Green Lantern gig, there's a whole host of roles he could slip into;   - The aforementioned Captain America - Uncharted's Nathan Drake - Treat William's son in Deep Rising 2: Now What?   The list is endless. More

RE: The Green Lantern Is...
Fillion is Captain America? That would be awesome. You can definately see him as the ultimates Captain, talking about receiving a good kicking from the Hulk to reporters then saying he'll be fine tomorrow.   Back on topic I can't see any of these guys as Hal Jordan maybe one of the other GL's as Hal is older than all these actors. Bradley Cooper
I am a fan of ryan reynolds but i dont thnk he would suit well for hal jordon, let him play deadpool (I am sure he will do very well) . But I think Bradley cooper bear a good resemblance to Hal jordon in the comics other than ryan reynolds and justin timberlake (why he is in the running is beyond me) . I would give it to Bradley Cooper. for Sinestro i would imagine someone english of the David Niven lookalike or something I dont know (maybe Hugh Grant who knows) More

L: BatFan Edit: Just read the article again, they said No to Michael Fassbender. Michael. Fassbender. Are you fucking serious? The guy's as serious and dedicated and as good as Christian Bale and on top of that he looks a lot like Hal Jordan and they said no to him. What a bunch of fucking morons. sp; What he said! Michael Fassbender would have been fucking awesome. Shame on you studio exec's!   Out of the three mentioned it is clearly Reynolds all the way. He's one of my pers More

Justin Timberlake could be a good choice
And i never thought i write that in any context except one where i'd been consulted about possible torture candidates. Green Lantern's a bit of a daft concept in the first place (admit it) - all power rings and vulnerability to anything yellow, like bananas. Surely they'll have to go semi-comedy on it. In fact, I seem to remember it been mooted as a Jack Black comedy a few re-writes ago. I'm picturing a Men in Black type feel to it as GL is introduced to the GL Corps, with Mr. Timberlake in the More

Ha!! Turns out that your unluckiest man in hollywood title has even reached his Cavill's IMDB page. Well done Empire. Unless you put it there yourselves. p; Anyway, Bradley Cooper for this, he's got that cocky attitude that would suit any Superhero's real life persona or alter ego. More

HMMMPH......
I would have preferred an unknown. Timberlake seems like they've got one eye on the usual teenage demographic. And ...hey.... let's cast Ryan Reynolds as Superman, Batman, Flash, Deadpool, Wolverine, Plastic man, Aquaman, Booster Gold and every other superhero ever created while we're at it....... A Green Lantern film could be pretty cool - but casting is critical guys - they have to get it right.....!!!! More

Not sure what to think.....
I haven't actually seen Bradley Cooper in anything, so all I have to go on is the one publicity shot used in every story about him where it looks like he just got out of bed. Not the best way to judge whether he could do the role or not, so I won't say yay or nay.    Reynolds is cool, but he'd need to be a bit more serious and not just a green version of Deadpool. I don't know whether he'd do that too well.   Timberlake is an out-of-the-blue choice. He's not a bad actor, More

Timberlake??? Really???
What has the world come to when "Justin-Bloody-Timberlake" is now considered to be a good enough actor to take on a huge Blockbuster? I, personally, am not very familiar with the source material but I am damn sure when it was written, it wasn't based on a some skinny dude with a voice higher than Charlotte Church. Now, from what I have seen/learnt about the character, I also feel that Nathan Fillion would be an excellent choice (He'd be Bruce Wayne with Humour). Now, please, More

My man on the inside...
...who works on Potter and what not, worked on the screen tests for this film - (Coopers, Timberlake's and Colin Farrell's) and according to him, everyone on set, including the director, was totally enamored with JT's performance in the suit...oh, and his niceness too - he even made tea for some of the crew. Suck up. I want Fillion for most things (in a dream world he would be Bravestar with John Goodman as the voice of his horse and Tim Olyphant as that wolf-villian) but i think the smart mon More

Yeah I wold gladly take Fillion over any of those guys mentioned. First time I watched that fan made trailer, It just fit perfectly. The more I think about it the more the Timberlake thing just astounds me. The producers must know that having one of the most loved comic book characters of all time being played by the guy who brought sexy back would surely drive the fans into pure outrage. It makes no sense to do this. More

Don't get me wrong...
I liked Justin Timberlake in Alpha Dog. He was the star of that movie by a huge mile...but I am not sure I can see him with a power ring and reciting the Green Lantern motto (flashing images of JT actually singing 'In Blackest Day, In Blackest Night...'), anyway...Reynolds or Cooper have my vote...probably Reynolds...as he is hot property right now...but Justin will need to do some serious convincing to get my vote... What... seriously!? Oh, oh wait, it's... no, no, just checked the date, not April first. Justin...Fucking...Timberlake! For Green Lantern! Now, I'm a big DC comics fan, and none more so than the old death-dodging, blue dwarf bothering, green ring slinger himself (hell, I'm almost pant-wettingly excited about the upcoming Blackest Night event) but everything I've heard about this movie has diminished my expectation of it by degrees; difficulties in casting, creating a new GL just for the movie ( More

Regarding Mr Timberlake
I'm not the biggest fan of comic books in fact most of you would consider me a heathen in that i only really watch films when it comes to both the Marvel and DC universe and i enjoy most of them, so i may not be in the best of rights to comment here. That being said I think Mr Timberlake may just be a dark horse here, he was brilliant in Alpha Dog and a twist of comedy in the role would serve as an excellent counter point to the uber-serious batmans and supermans they have going these days. The film won't live up to the expectations of us GREEN LANTERN Fans (pretty much like all comic book adaptations), regardless of who is chosen for the role. RE: The Green Lantern Is...
I heard the Timberlake rumour last night and honestly if he gets the gig I will lose all interest in the film I orignally had (which is a lot). Even if we take away the fact that he's not a good actor your still left with the fact that his voice (normal not singing) is very high and camp, an action hero's voice that aint. I remember people saying with Iron Man that Terrance Howard's voice was pretty high and camp "Toneeeeee!" and were glad that he wasn't playing War Machine. I just can't see wh More

I became a fan of GL in the early 1960ies. I've been waiting anxiously for the movie since then!!! Then I see a movie is being made - then I see the magnificent fan trailer showing that Nathan Fillion is perfect casting - RESULT! But of coure the producers can't see that.
