Exclusive: New Mesrine Image
Vincent Cassel in 2-part gangster film

01 June 2009  |  Written by Helen O'Hara

The new issue of Empire magazine is now on sale, and among the tidal wave of news, features and reviews inside you'll find a new look at Vincent Cassel-starring French crime drama Mesrine: a film so big they have to release it in two parts, Mesrine: Killer Instinct and Mesrine: Public Enemy No.1.

Now we know what you're thinking: you don't watch films made by cheese-eating surrender monkeys - but stick with us! Not only is Cassel himself on explosively good form in the film, but it's a sprawling portrait of French public enemy no. 1 (as the title already suggests). This image comes from the first half of the epic, with Mesrine taking violent issue with a guy who beat up his girlfriend. Unwise, dude, unwise.

Mesrine: Killer Instinct is out on August 7, with Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1 following on August 28.

Already seen these films
The first film was better than the second which suffers from being too historically accurate (the first film is based on Mesrines book and lots of it is made up or over exaggerated to make it more entertaining) and it feels a lot more like a TV Movie than the first. As a mad Cassel fan I was looking forward to these films for ages, both have good sequences and are extremely violent but overall I was pretty disappointed. They aren't bad films but they aren't brilliant either. More
