Clint Eastwood Slays US Box Office
His Gran Torino takes first place

Clint Eastwood, aka living proof that your retired grandad is just lazy, landed top of the box office this weekend, with a stunning $29 million for his Gran Torino, in its first week on wide release. It's his biggest opening ever as either star or director (he's both in this one) and testament to the fact that everyone loves Clint, even when he's playing a big ol' racist.

Left in Torino's dust with a pretty good $21.5 million was Bride Wars, which sees Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson duke it out to see who is really America's sweetheart - sorry, sees them play brides whose weddings are booked for the same day. Just behind that is scary movie The Unborn with $21.1 million, an extremely good opening for a horror.

In fourth and fifth place are Marley and Me, proving that everyone loves a shaggy dog story, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, David Fincher's backwards love story.

For the full chart, head on over to Box Office Mojo.

It fully deserves to be No.1
My cinema did a Clint Eastwood celebration week and showed seven of his movies as well as Changelling and one of those was a preview showing of Gran Torino and it was BRILLIANT. You can imagine Walt Kowalski (Clint's character) is really what Dirty Harry would have been like in his old age, especially in the first half of Gran Torino all teeth grinding, racist, hating the foreign neighbours for polluting his neighbourhood; actually hating the younger generation American or foreign in general. Do you feel lucky.........?
This is the closest we're gonna get to a Dirty Harry sequel I'd imagine. More

RE: FLASHMAN
So it’s basically the big screen U.S. version of Alf Garnet?!?  I’m sure Prince Harry will be enjoying this one!! More

RE: FLASHMAN
Take Clint out of the lead role, and chances are it would be a very dull offering... straight to DVD even, but it's one of those occasions where the star makes it work, and work damn well.  Quite an underwhelming story like I said, and it treads old ground.  It's so wrong to laugh at racism of course, but in the context of the film you won't stop sniggering at some of his "stuck in his ways old bigot" put downs.   Please be aware that Clint himself seems to sing the titl More

FLASHMAN
Sorry to be a killjoy, but my understanding is that, while the trailer suggests "OLD DIRTY HARRY", it's actually quite a quirky little drama, that fits neatly into the Great Man's recent body of mature and distinguished work................................. What I'm hoping, is that, in this particularly awful year for Industry deaths, that THE ACADEMY, realizing that, "once he's gone, he's gone", will give Clint, (and Peter O' Toole come to that) one last tilt at an acting More

this just goes to show you: RACISM RULES!!!! More

Great to see that Clint is appreciated by the cinema goers as much as the critics. Usually he's accused of Oscar-baiting but with hardly being nominated and being number 1 at the box office, it shows Clint to be a crowd pleaser as well as critic tickler. More

RE:
Gran Torino is absolutely awesome... it's basically Clint delivering threats and awesome lines through gritted teeth, and dishing out some hilariously racist comments (I know that's not a good thing, but it is very funny)   Lot more laughs than you would be expecting, and a massively entertaining film, although it's nothing you haven't seen before. I cannot wait to see Gran Torino. Clint is still a serious badass! More
