Sam Raimi Talks Spider-Man 4
A script will be done in a few months

06 June 2008  |  Written by Olly Richards  |  Source: Coming Soon, IESB

submit to reddit

After committing several years of his life to the series and seeing his third effort greeted with less than enormous enthusiasm, it was widely thought that Sam Raimi would probably only come back to the Spider-man series in a producing capacity, rather than directing. But speaking to Comingsoon.com Raimi gave every indication that he's open, and actually quite eager, to direct a fourth.

"James Vanderbilt is writing the script and I'm excited to read it. I think it's going to be done in a few months," Raimi said. "I'm hoping it's as great as our discussions were about it and I'm hoping it feels right for me because I love Spider-Man. I'm hoping I'm well rested enough to embrace it and I'm hoping Sony wants me to do it. If all of those things come together, I would love to do it."

He also stated that were he to return he'd have no intention of re-casting the roles. For the rest, head here.

In relate news, IESB spoke to J.K. Simmons (J. Jonah Jameson in the series) who says he'd be up for further films and said he'd spoken to Tobey Maguire about the possibility of coming back for more.

"There was talk of doing four and five concurrently and I don’t know if they’re still considering that or not," he said, "I spoke to Tobey in, I guess it was February…sort of awards season time and, y’know, he’s certainly amenable to doing some more and hopefully we’ll be able to get everybody back and make another good one."

There's more of that interview here. That, of course, doesn't count as confirmation of anything, but all this is suggesting that a fourth film in the series with all the original cast members is still a definite possibility. Does that have you excited or would you rather leave it at three?

Spider-man 3 was fine
I'm still pissed with Raimi for ruining the first movie and changing The Green Goblin/Gwen Stacy arc - ya know Spidey's most important story EVER! Who gives a $hit about Venom? He's a lame character anyway. And Harry did die in the comics. Ya have to take the movies as movies and seperate from the comics. I think all of the movies have been brilliant. Peter is a sad character, though he's meant to hide it more, I think Tobey is great in the role. Kirsten is great as MJ too. Hopefully 4 will be j More

nope
if anything spidey 4 and 5 should have been about venom as he is everything that spidey is but bad...but seeing as they "killed" him off that rules that idea out, it also rules out anythin about carnage the only villan that spidey and venom worked together to defeat so the only good villain left is lizard and he should have been done for spidey 2, so all in all they should just give up! RE: 12345678.........
The third movie suffered from being overcrowded with sub-plots and backstories but there were still some great moments such as The New Goblin/Spiderman fight and the introduction of Sandman. It's only big flaw is Rami's refusal not to give every hero and villian a story arc instead of just letting them show up and kick arse (Although what a colossul flaw this turned out to be). I say let him do the fourth one as long as he only has two villians MAX, ONE main plot arc and two sub-plots at THE More

Im a big fan of the spidey series but i think its time for a new director and a new spidey. And definetly a new mary jane, i always thought kirsten dunst was terrible. It would also be good if they didnt arse about with the story and maybe make peter parker actually happy in the next movie instead of crying so much. More

RE: Aw hell no.
Sam let a lot of people down, but he made a couple of good films. He deserves another stab at it. I say this through clenched teeth for what he did with the third film, almost unforgiveable. Killing Harry, what a prick. But he's got a long way to go before he makes me develop a Lucas sized hatred of him so why not see what he can do to bring Spidey back with a bang. If he's really lost it, reboot Incredible Hulk stylee. More

Carnage, Scorpion, Shocker or Lizard? Please god, leave the Vulture be.
Right. I am actually all for this if they get it right. I think they should start focusing on the comic story arcs instead of trying to combine everything. Spider-Man 3 had too much in it to work, they were trying to shove everything in and it basically exploded in everyone's faces. I also think that, they should alter Peters personality a bit, more to the comic Peter Parker. I don't think I'll ever agree with Kirsten Dunst, but there's nothing much I can do about that. Spider-Man Begins?
Give Spider-Man the ‘Batman Begins’ treatment. I thought Raimi did a very average job of the first instalment, made an admirable effort with the second, and destroyed any credibility he’d gained with the third. Does anyone recall the great designs produced for the first film, for what looked like a bio-mechanical Green Goblin? Raimi chose the Power Ranger Goblin over those. After Sandman being in Spidey 3, I think it's safe to say that there are no good villians left that the general public will know; the film makers are now surely in the realms of geekdom. L: ilovekaren this would be good if they did it like a standalone movie the story lines of the other three are worn out. sp; I agree in a way. Just have Peter and MJ living together and make Spidey's relationship with the villian the centre of the piece. For that reason, The Lizard is perfect - he has an emotional pull being Peter's mentor and would make for some good moral dilemmas. Also (as I recall) he faced off with the Lizard in a swamp, which would be a new environment and would More

RE: Sam Raimi Talks Spider-Man 4
Ordinarily I'd be very excited indeed by this news, but Spiderman 3 ruined my desire to see any more of these films. Watching it was like having my face rubbed in feces for 2 hours, and I thought Raimi's contempt for Venom was all-too-visible onscreen. I understand he's no fan of the character but there's a great movie to be made of him and his handling of it seemed to me perfunctory at best, petulant at worst. I came out of it feeling very short-changed, and upon rewatching it, scenes that mer More

RE: Sam Raimi Talks Spider-Man 4
I actually thought Spidey 3 was pretty good. Sandman was a bit lame, but luckily Thomas Hayden Church's performance was a saving grace. The infamous dance bit was, I thought, typical Raimi and not out of place in a comic book movie of this type.    Bring back all the original cast, especially the lovely Bryce Dallas Howard as Gwen Stacey, and have The Croc and/or The Vulture as the villain(s),....game on! I think it's good news, because the series is terrific as a whole, the first two films rock, and the there still was something enjoyable in the third (Empire's review was spot-on). I'd like it to be less doom and angst and more of the fun Spidey stuff. More

Good news & Bad News
Good News - I think Raimi will be worth keeping Bad News - I think the cast does need re-shaping. Although I want to see more of Bryce Dallas-Howard and Topher Grace (not much luck there though). I hate the people that bash Spidey 3. Yes, Venom wasn't particuallry well handled but people that say there was no character developement can get right out. Did these people see Harry Potter & The Order of the Pheonix? We saw no character development there, you were just expected to know who the More

I hope he does simply to erase the memory of the 3 - but it has to be really good or its going to start turning out like the Batman films did (post Begins of course!) More

I'm currently indifferent...
...'were he to return he'd have no intention of re-casting the roles'. So does that mean he's somehow tempted the cast to come back? Because Dunst was a definite 'no' for another sequel from what I've read. More

I liked Spidey 3 even if I felt Sandman was one villain too many (though Church give a good performance). Thing is though, Spider-Man 3 concluded many storylines and I think it'd be more natural to leave the franchise for a while and then recast the lead roles (keep JK Simmons though). I also say this because I acknowledge the third one did have a mixed reaction. More

I'd welcome it...
The third one is a mess but Sam Raimi is allowed a blip, his other films allow him a pass.... I hope he goes back to his original idea for the third film and has Kraven arriving in town ready to hunt spider man More
