Here be vampires. Sexy vampires.

We occasionaly get emails from readers asking why we haven't covered a particular film or news story. Often it's because we haven't run a pirated or leaked trailer – we don't do that, boo piracy! – but recently we've had a number of furious questioning missives asking why we've run nothing on the movie Twilight.

The short answer is: it's not a project that had particular recognition for us and the recently released featurettes wouldn't play for users outside the US, so we couldn't watch them. But now we realise that there are a lot of people who are really excited by this movie. So, we know that those people will be very keen to see the first official cast photo from the film, which Cinematical has here (the previous photos were leaked tests).

For those, like us, to whom Twilight is an unknown quantity, the film is based on a very successful series of horror-romance novels by Stephanie Meyer. They tell of Bella Swan, a teenage girl who moves to Washington with her mother and her mother's new husband and finds herself drawn to a mysterious boy, as teenage girls are wont to do. Turns out he's a vampire, but a 'vegetarian' one who only drinks animal blood. They get the warm and squishies for each other and team-up to thwart a band of evil vampires who want to sup of Bella's neck.

The film is being directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen) and features a cast including Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson (Cedric Diggory from Harry Potter) and Nikki Reed. Recently it's become one of the most searched films on IMDb, despite the lack of big names, so this could be absolutely enormous.

Please rest assured readers. We will report on any major Twilight news from now on. So please desist in the angry emails. They're mean.

I'd just like to point out that Bella does not move with her mother and stepfather; she moves to Forks to live with her father. Someone had said that Bella is moving to get over the break up of her family. Not necessicarily true because her parents had been divorced for quite some time. That's explained in the novel if you read it. Otherwise, thank you for writing this article and I hope to hear more from you guys. :] More

Twilight
The books are really really amazing, i recommend them to anyone who will listen. But in all honesty, the film does look a bit crap. I think it will be like the harry potter films - the books and the films are like two seperate things. but anyway, i'm going to go and see it when it's out. you never know, it might be good :D More

Can't wait for Twilight! Just to let you guys know, I understand you aren't familiar with the series, but Bella moves to Forks to live with her father after her mother gets remarried. She didn't move to Forks with her mother and new stepfather. More

awful awful awful - just look at these people - particularly the guy at the front - looks like the OC crossed with the undead - a worse mix i cannot imagine. please lets move on from Buffy - which was a superb series with GOOD WRITING and ORIGINAL IDEAS.......this whole Twilight thing should be left just there - in the Twilight with all the other turkeys that get released. RE: RE:
I have read the books - which are very much for teenagers - and I'm an ageing 30. Oh the shame. Let me tell you now: everything in the story is cliché, and all the adolescent hormones floating around, well... But I tore my way through those books, I was completely hooked! It was only afterwards that I kinda went, "yeah, it's 100% cliché..." ha! I love the books but acknowledge their flaws - sometimes I just want to slap Bella - but for me they were an excellent read, and they're great More

RE:
L: ashmeeeeee and to whoever said "vampires should be scary" then you don't know anything about these. READ THE BOOK before you talk SH*T. read the first 2 books and there's exactly one scene where the vampires seem scary. Most of the time they are just irrationally and annoyingly angsty with lamest blood lust ever (it feels like somebody on a low carbs diet craving after a cinnamon bun). More

OKay people Heres what i think If you're going to talk bad about this book READ IT FIRST. don't judge it by that ONE promo pic. You don't even know what this is about. and to whoever said "vampires should be scary" then you don't know anything about these. READ THE BOOK before you talk SH*T. And Bella moves to Forks to live with HER DAD. not her mom and her boyfriend. More

I wasn't mean/angry in my e-mail.. I just nicely asked for some 'Twilight' coverage! And unless you're a fan of the novels, you probably won't be excited about this film. That's my guess, anyway. Personally.. this movie is my event of the year, along with the 4th book in the series being released in August! More

The e-mailers have shown their faces, Elamela and Prophecygirl you should be ashamed for being mean to Olly by e-mail...or not depending on how your feeling at the time :p   Yet to be impressed by this film, sounds pretty generic vampire teen stuff to me, i'll wait for "lost boys 2" or dust off "Near Dark" dvd instead.   More

RE:
I've read the first two books and they really are melodramatic and silly. The mood is nice at times but that's about it. I kept waiting for it to get better at some point, but it never did. The least interesting portrayal of vampires EVER (they have no weaknesses whatsoever. But still they keep being all angsty about it...). The characters are paper thin and beyond annoying. The plot is lame and structurally lacking. And the sad thing? I'll probably pay to see this movie when the time com More

Why all the anger-it sounds like.....
PANTS! Ooooooohh! Lets try and look all mean and moody! A Jimmie Dean rip off hair-do man! obviously inspired by visuals of "The Craft" (why would anyone want to aspire to that crap), story via "Lost boys" sex reversal, etc. etc. Perhaps the books are okay-but Hollywood has a tendency of painting over any individual vehicles initial refinements with large brushes of genre copying magnolia. Don't hold ya breath on this one. More

Like a vampiric zac efron with better hair...
...is the best way to sum up what the draw is! I did wonder what was with the absence with twilight coverage over here...mainly cause this kind of research is integral to my avoiding study. Sceptical though i was when i opened twilight, it's highly addictive and despite the net featurettes i've seen so far (vampires hoppin' about like monkeys) it's the whole bella-edward chemistry that draws you in (despite edwards cheese laden dialogue) and gets you screaming like a band of tweens around zac ef More

Blimey, it looks like Buffy meets High School Musical. As per Acho, i've never heard of these but it does sound all a bit twee. What I really want is for someone to make Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles & Mayfair Witch stories PROPERLY. Interview With the Vampire was a reasonable start, but Queen of the Damned was way off the mark. I did enjoy it but it didnt ring true to the books, which by most accounts could almost be classed as historical novels, such is the depth of detail of the narrati More

Why the fuss?
I admit, I've never read the books, or even heard of them until recently, so I can only assume they have a huge fan bass, as I don't think this looks all that great. I've watched the featurettes and the whole thing looks quite naff. Admittedly, sometimes effects films will, cos there's green screens and clearly visible flying wires, but still....it all looked very tweenie, and not in a good way. Remains to be seen though, I guess. More
