Ocean's 13 Steals Number One Spot
But not so hot for Hostel Part II

11 June 2007  |  Written by

As everyone expected, it was George Clooney and co sitting suavely at the top of the US box office this weekend. Ocean's Thirteen, the, confusingly, third in the heist franchise took a highly respectable $37,080,000, a lot more than its closest rival. Which – shiver me timbers! – was Pirates of the Caribbean 3. At World's End is looking highly unlikely to get near the $423 million of Dead Man's Chest, since its weekend totals are dropping by around 50% week on week, but few studios would turn their noses up at the $253million it's currently made domestically. The little film that could, Knocked Up, is doing healthy bouncing business with $66million after two weeks.

The weekend was not so kind to two other new entries. Surf's Up, the latest penguin movie (and therefore latest movie to incur the wrath of our penguin-phobic Helen O'Hara) did a bit of a belly slide with $18 million. No flop, certainly, but penguins are supposed to be the '00s equivalent of Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts in the '90s.

Big disappointment status was reserved for Hostel Part II. Where the first movie opened with a surprise $19.6million, the second could only manage $8.8million, despite opening on a high number of screens. It's possible that people were not so in the mood for watching young women get slashed to bits in the middle of summer. People are weird like that.

Chris Hewitt is to into kissing the arses of the stars that he can't realise that Eli Roth is fucking rubbish. Also, his Cannes blogs were shite. More

Hostel
Hostel part 1 was fucking rubbish so I really don't hold much hope for the second addition of 'hardcore' violence inflicted on characters you don't give a crap about!!! More

It's certainly no coincidence that the most effective scenes in Hostel II are the ones where Roth, whom one can hardly deny knows his stuff even if he hasn't a clue how to do anything special off his own bat, references other movies (bathing in blood) or throws in cameos from some truly legendary underground stars like The Goddess Who Graces Us With Her Presence Edwige Fenech ("Hands on your pencils boys!" She's still got it...), the ever excellent Luc Merenda and of course, the great More

Empire's chum in crap film non-surprise
Can't wait to read Empire's review of Hostel II. With Chris Hewitt disappearing rapidly up the arse of any director / actor he comes into contact with, the fact he has a walk on part in Hostel II suggests that this film will get no less than three stars even though US reviews (and box office) suggest this is the worst 'torture porn' film yet. The first one was gash too - totally unrealistic so not at all scary with some outstandingly pony special effects. More

RE: Oceans 13
And I don't get all the Eli Roth hating. He seems like quite a funny bloke who loves his horror films...Why doesn't Steven Soderbergh get bagged for remaking the same film 3 times to part the gullible with their hard-earned? More

Hostel was great and far better than watching a bunch of smug overpaid twats backslapping each other for a couple of hours. Looking forward to Hostel 2 - Keane apparently quite liked the 1st one.... More

Oceans 13
Oceans 13 was shit, just like 12. Thanks Mr '4 stars' Empire! I should have trusted my own better judgement. You got me with this, and Miami Vice. Never again. Oh, and stop posting the same comment Keane. More

I liked Hostel. Aside from the ending I thought it was pretty creepy and it certainly stayed with me longer than most of the recent spate of horror-porn that now seems never ending. I'm optimistic about part II (it's had pretty decent reviews) and I even quite like Roth. Maybe I should be reading TF..... More

no people didn't go see Hostel because the film looked rubbish, Eli Roth is one of the worst directors going & Hostel was A-W-F-U-L. THAT is the reason why it wasn't a hit. I wish Empire would stop kissing his arse. More

Sense at last?
Thank God Hostel 2 crashed. Eli Roth is such an arrogant twat, and these types of 'horror' flick have, in my humble opinion, outstayed their welcome. Though I'm sure Harry (I love Roth so much I want his babies) Knowles will be trying to recruit more viewers as we speak! More

Well done everybody who didn't go and see the film. Maybe it might deflate Roth's ego for a little while. More

Enjoyable
Good movie if not a little confusing at the begining. However, once things begin to unfold it makes sense. Better than 12 and as good as 11. Pacino is very good too. Got 1/5 in the Irish Times entertainment supplement yesterday. Tossers. Leave your brains at home, just because you write for a pretentious newspaper does not mean you can only like intellectual things. More

not surprising. the reason people went to see the first one was because of the shock value and word of mouth. why are people gonna shell out for basically more of the same? More
