Grindhouse Dismantled
UK audiences will see two separate films

30 April 2007  |  Written by

It’s been announced that Grindhouse, Tarantino and Rodriguez’s double-headed exploitation-fest, will now be split into two separate features for its UK release. QT’s slasher fick, Death Proof, will screech onto screens on September 21, whilst Robert Rodiguez’s zombie-horror, Planet Terror, is yet to receive a confirmed release date.

Having now officially tanked at the US Box Office, The Weinstein Company’s head-honcho, Harvey, had this to say about the decision to split the double-feature down the middle: “Based on US audience's positive reactions to Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof and Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror combined with their resistance to the three-hour running time, we’ve revised our UK release plans to allow audiences the chance to see the films separately, like they will be shown in all international territories.”

If you have a weak bladder and the three hour-plus running time of the original cut sent you into an excrutiating, leg-crossing frenzy, then this may come as soothing news. But this will no doubt be a hugely controversial decision amongst those who were looking forward to experiencing the full Grindhouse extravaganza as the filmmakers originally intended.

So, what do you think? The discussions are raging over at our forums. Head over there now to join the Grindhouse debate.

How does anyone have the right to rip a movie in two just cos it didn't do well in the US? Punters would have been really furious if (because they were over 3 hours each) The Lord Of The Rings movies were released in six installments instead of three! I don't condone, buy or even borrow pirate DVDs but if it's the only way I'll get to see this movie intact I'm going to make an exception!!! More

Very dissapointed that yet again we get the scraps that the US decide to give us. The Americans have never "got" Tarantino like us Brits have, and now, because of the half a year gap between US and European release dates that we still have, the 'test' audience says no so we all suffer. I've actually seen the american cut of grindhouse. I enjoyed it. Some of the missing scene parts were funny but I still would have liked to see a total uncut version. I don't see why they can't bring out the US cut. Maybe we'll get it more than the american crowd did. They should just bring out the total uncut version to DVD. RE: Grindhouse Dismantled
You misunderstand. The films that you mention were under-appreciated certainly. However, what RR and QT have created is essentially a gimmick first and movies second. The audience (for whatever reason) didn't buy into the gimmick. The producers and distributers have had to take up the slack because that is their job. Grindhouse could have originally been released as two seperate films but the Directors chose to create something different and new and nobody went to see it.&nb More

Recovering losses
As the movie tanked Stateside, the Weinsteins have to stop the film haemorrhaging money, so it is purely a business decision to recoup their losses. It's a shame, as QT said in this months Empire that the Grindhouse version is the proper one, not the extended single releases. As the UK was one of only three territories to get the double release, it's a pity it won't happen. Yet again big business triumphs over artistic license. More

Screw you Harvey
What a let down. Just coz The weinsteins threw there toys out of the pram at disney. and then screwed up the release in the states, we in this country have to pay double. No fu?%in way. Don't forget the UK made tarantino," Dogs "hardly caused a ripple in the states until the uk went nuts over it. I will see 'em on pirate. No way am i paying for this. More

How crap is that? As a fan of the QT and Rodriquez, i was looking forward to a 3hr double headed slice of gore. Instead we get a version which neither directors wanted which spoils the overall effect. AND WHAT HAPPENED TO THE FAKE TRAILERS? More

Absolute nonsense
This is the worst case of dumbing down I've come across in ages. I saw Grindhouse in New York last month, and admittedly the cinema was quiet, but it was great. Planet Terror, despite what the bulk of the critics say is fantastic. Its funny, way over the top and very very enjoyable. Death Proof unfortunately isn't as great as it could be. While the action is brilliant and again very funny, the film is lsowed down by the clunkiest dialogue Tarantino has ever produced, spoken by his dullest c More

Arrrgh
Ok, who do I have to write to/ speak to/ kill. This is obserd; nothing but an infringemnt of my creative rights to see as intended. Directors cut bleeding from the arse. This is grindhouse; and this such "NEW" proposal is not the movie. A sudden whisp of intelligence here. I've been promised a genre flick and gone in and been urinated on by the homeless. If it tanked in the US who's to say it will tank over here? Unless the breaking of promise is enough to basically ruin anything ethic More

From the star of "destiny turns on the radio" & the director of "spy kids"
Maybe it hasn't made any money because people just didn't want to see it. I thought it looked shite from the moment they planned it. Both Tarantino and Rodriguez are so up their own arses it's unreal. If this came out ten years ago it probably would've done good business but shorely these guy's have had their day? I mean, I'm boycotting it purely for the fact that my xmas was ruined by the fucking Spy Kids trilogy! More

This is so rubbish, I am now boycotting both films out of sheer petulance, I also registered for the sole intention of writing this post. If I could be bothered I'd learn about web pages and set up some kind of online petition. Hears an idea...
Why don't they go for a 3 pronged approach and give the audience a choice. Spilt it in two if they must but show it as the original double bill too. The small bladder gang and fussier fans may choose one over the other while the fans with more understanding will go for the orginal version. Everyone wins. Unlikely I know, but if only. More

Absolute commercial suicide!!!!
Instead od foing to see something I anticipated eagerly, I absolutely will boycott this now. It's one thing to indulge Rodriguez and Tarantino's fanboy indulgences when there's something in it for us, but why the hell would anyone pay for 80 minutes of this stuff twice, particularly when the rationale for this numty-ness is that the distributor is openly questioning our relative intellect compared with our colonial cousins? I read this article and posted my opinions about it, like most people here I was angry at the blatant profit-driven cannabilising of what promised to be a potential masterpiece. But then I came back next day to look at the forum and, well, DAMN! this isn't normal anger anymore, half the people here are ready to start killing studio execs over this. Wouldn't it be great if this was all some kind of large marketing campaign from the Weinsteins to get everybody wound up and talking about Grindhouse before actually releasing it in full.? The amount of free publicity its now getting must be working just as well as an expensive ad campaign and would be getting people even more psyched to see it in all its glory if released  later in the year. Right guys and girls we all know what this about. Weinstein is trying to claw back as much money as he can because of the lack-luster performance in the US. He seems to think that making Brits pay twice (remember other international audiences were already getting two releases so hes only f*cking us with this announcement) will help soften the blow. Does anybody know where they stand with regard to the trade descriptions act if it has already been advertised as a double feature?
