No Fletch For Zach Braff
Scrubs star turns down Fletch Won

24 April 2007  |  Written by   |  Source: TV Guide

It is truly a dark day for Fletch fans around the world this morning. After all the bumps and disappointments, after all the times when we thought the film would never get made, finally, it seemed, Fletch's luck was on the turn. Landing in the lap of Scrubs creator and certified genius BIll Lawrence, the film had finally found a loving had to nurture it into creation. What's more Lawrence had even enlisted his Scrubs star - and quite possibly the funniest man on television -, Zach Braff, to assume the title role.

But, in a cruel twist of fate, the Braffmeister has pulled out of the project, leaving Fletch Won without a Fletch. In a recent interview with TV Guide Lawrence told the magazine “"Zach is writing and directing his own film at Paramount. I'm very happy for him. We were looking forward to doing this thing together, but when you get an opportunity like that, you've got to take it."

So there you have it, our hopes dashed upon the rocks of fate like so many plywood rowboats. Thus, while Braff gears up for Open Hearts, Lawrence must cast about for another man to fill Irwin Fletcher’s myriad disguises. Back to the drawing board.

Either or
Jason Lee or Ryan Reynolds would be great. 2 very great actors who are both channeling some fletch. More

OMG, just STOP!
Hollywood, please take note. STOP REMAKING STUFF!! PLEASE! Fletch was never a Beverly Hills Cop, or a Caddyshack but it is still a classic example of the time, a nice slice of retro cheese, if you will. Chevy Chase was THE perfect Fletch and the role was his - no-one could do it better as it was a case of Chevy Chase played Fletch playing Chevy Chase...awesome! Is there such a lack of orignality that history must repeat itself? Move on, please... More

it's gotta be jason lee.... perfect for the role. but if not him, how about someone like Seth Rogan?? or maybe even Paul Rudd? More

I have nothing against Reynolds....
..... he was fine in some stuff, but..... LEE ALL THE WAY!!! Studios wouldn't let Smith hire him 'cos he wasn't that well known. Well that was pre-'Earl' so now....???!? More

There is one Fletch and one only.
Whoever they cast as Fletch it doesn't matter, I will only ever be able to picture Chevy Chase as Fletch. Chances are it will probably be a turd of a movie anyhoo, these things usually are. More

Gutted !!
This project is doomed. First of all, the studio dicks won't allow Kevin Smith to cast Jason Lee (who was perfect) and now this. I was coming round to idea of Zach Braff, however, I won't be jumping on the Ryan Reynolds bandwagon. He's a good comedy actor but just can't see him as Fletch. More

Ryan Renolds....... charismatic but with a poor track record.
is kind of a good choice but his comic persona, in my opinion, is a touch too similar to earlier Chevy Chase's. Obviously not a bad thing in and of itself but I'd personally prefer Jason Lee partially due to the fact he's that bit older. I've got a funny feelin that the Lee/Reynolds split has a lot to do with age, the youngsters favouring Reynolds. Nowt wrong with that of course. I can't beleive that the casting of Fletch has prompted me to post TWICE. I am a sad little man. More

RE: Fletch Won
Ryan Reynolds is a good idea. With the right material, he is a very funny man. Pity he whores himself to rather rubbish films. Jason Lee is also a good idea but with a full time series it might be hard for him to find the time. More

Yeah, A few years ago Jason Lee didnt have the profile for a studio to risk him carrying a fletch movie, but now with the success of My Name Is Earl they should really consider him for the role. More

Good news, not bad, for ALL concerned.
Don't get me wrong Braff's a funny, talented bloke but Fletch he aint. His more neurotic aproach to comedy applied to the sly-old-street-smart-dog character of Fletch would have been all wrong. Now let's hope they hire Jason Lee like Kev Smith was going to do when he tried to get a Fletch project off the ground a few years back. JASON LEE FOR FLETCH! More
