Peter Weir Dips Into Shadow Divers
A true tale of U-boat recovery

16 November 2006  |  Written by   |  Source: The Hollywood Reporter

After spending a long time trying to get Johnny Depp and gunrunning drama Shantaram in the same country so production could actually begin, director Peter weir finally stopped trying to bring the producers around to his way of thinking and left the film.

He’s now signed on to direct Shadow Divers, which is being adapted from Robert Kurson’s book Shadow Divers: The True Adventures Of Two Americans Who Discovered Hitler’s Lost Sub.

The story – unsurprisingly – follows two divers who find a sunken U-boat 60 miles offshore from New Jersey. They risk their lives time and again over a six-year period to uncover the vessel’s history.

William Broyles Jr, who last wrote a draft of Flags Of Our Fathers, has penned the adaptation for the Fox 2000 studio, but there’s no start date yet.

Weir also has a William Gibson adaptation simmering away in development – he owns the rights to Gibson’s cyberpunk classic Pattern Recognition. But we guess Divers will go before the cameras first.

Anything Peter Weir is great. Discovering a sub explores his usual theme of people and their environments. More
