The Empire Awards Nominees Are Announced!
And the lucky people and fillums are…

Ladies and gentlemen, it is here at last. Now that that little American do is over with, the genuine biggest awards ceremony on the movie calendar can begin!

Yes, the Sony Ericsson Empire Awards 2005 will take place on Sunday March 13 in London's Guildhall, in a star-studded evening of pure celebrity. For those of you who can't make it, Five will be broadcasting extensive highlights on Tuesday 15 March.

Johnny Vaughan, as we told you last week, will be our witty and wonderful compere for the evening – but the real news today is that we can now tell you the full list of nominees – and a bumper year it is too!

Proving, if proof were needed, that Empire readers have longer memories than Oscar voters and considerably better taste, the line-up reflects a cross-section of the great, the good and the kick-ass.

Our Best Picture nominees include the practically perfect animated extravaganza that is The Incredibles, the gorgeously shot and super-stylish Collateral and the slightly weird but utterly wonderful Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. And we haven't even mentioned the other three nominees, all of which prove that sequels can outdo the originals - The Bourne Supremacy, Spider-Man 2 and Kill Bill Vol.2.

Best British Picture nominees include Shane Meadow's gritty revenge story Dead Man's Shoes, Roger Michell's Enduring Love, Matthew Vaughn's gangster drama Layer Cake, Beeban Kidron's Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason and of course the rom-zom-com that is, that can only be, Shaun of the Dead.

After three years of Lord of the Rings dominance, the nominations are spread pretty evenly this time around. Layer Cake, Shaun of the Dead, Enduring Love and Spider-Man 2 all get five nominations. Close behind with four each are Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Bourne Supremacy, while Kill Bill Vol. 2, Dead Man's Shoes, The Village and Collateral all have three nods. Finding Neverland has two, and everything else takes a single nomination each. But remember, this isn't the Oscars – anything can happen and usually does.
