Day three of Comic-Con is traditionally the biggest day of the 'Con, and it kicked off in spectacular fashion today when Zack Snyder dropped by and brought with him the first footage from the currently-filming Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice.
The panel began with concept art from the film - quick shots of Batman standing by his Batmobile, a shot of Superman stumbling out of a ship in what appeared to be Arctic tundra while carrying someone in his arms - but it was the footage that pretty much blew the roof right off Hall H.
It was short but cut right to the heart of the matter. Set at night, in pouring rain, it begins on a rooftop with Ben Affleck’s Batman – in souped-up armour much like he wields in Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, including glowing eyes – pulling a tarpaulin off the Bat-Signal. It shines into the sky, and then, illuminated against the clouds, flecked with lightning, standing inside the symbol, is Henry Cavill’s Superman. And he does not look happy, his eyes glowing red with a burgeoning heat-vision ray. The camera tracks in on Batman’s face as he grimaces... and cut to black.
No dialogue at this point, so there’s no idea of what Affleck sounds like as Batman, or indeed a wider sense of the story, but the message is clear: Clark and Bruce are going to face off, and Bruce has enhanced his Batsuit to compensate for the most powerful man alive.
After that, Snyder also brought out Cavill, Affleck and Gal Gadot – with the first look at the actress as Wonder Woman flashing around the cavernous arena on screens to say a quick hello. And then, like that – just like the Caped Crusader himself – they were gone. But it’s quite a start for a day that will feature all of the Avengers on stage later on. The gauntlet has been well and truly thrown down.
