The 301 Greatest Movies Of All Time

We asked, you voted in huge numbers for Empire's 301 Greatest Movies Of All Time and now the results are in. The full list, including some extensive and exclusive features, is in the July issue of Empire, which hits newsagents' shelves on Thursday and which should already be arriving with subscribers, but we can now officially announce that Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back is your number one.

Perhaps George Lucas' space saga is back at the top of your minds after the recent start on Episode VII, or perhaps you all just got tired of voting for The Godfather and gave up when it hit the number two spot, but either way there's a new sheriff in town, and he carries a good blaster by his side. There are other surprises among the results, and you can view the full list here.

Empire Magazine 301 Greatest Movies Of All Time Cover

This month's Empire magazine of course not only has the full list but a plethora of supporting content on many of the films that made the cut. We have the story behind that shock ending of Planet Of The Apes, an oral history of Braveheart, behind-the-scenes pictures from Zulu, John Logan on Skyfall and George Lucas on The Empire Strikes Back - among many, many other goodies.

To explore the issue in more depth, head over this way for a sneak preview of what's inside, and make sure to subscribe so that you never miss an issue.

May the force be with you lot.
Can't believe my eyes that Star Wars is above The Godfather and the Avengers is in the top twenty. Have a word with yourselves before ever doing this again. More

Little bit of a moan
How the hell did 'Revenge of the Sith' make the list...and why is 'Trainspotting' at 60. Really...'Catching Fire' and 'The Winter Soldier' I mean yeah those were good movies but they don't by any means belong on a list of greatest films of all time. 28 Days Later is at 299!! How!! And both the new Star Trek films are on here!! So many I disagree with Transformers, Les Mis, Frozen, Anchorman, Avatar and Django. Where was Spider-Man 2 (Raimi) Short Term 12. Why is Shaun Of The Dead behind Hot Fu More

Best film? For me it's The Fountain, favourites should mean something, they need to be personal. More

RE: Definitely surprised...?
I guess anyone who thinks Braveheart is good s it explains up front - this is a USER poll. Ie anyone could vote in it, including yourself. So the order came from user votes - basically the demographic currently reading Empire. More

Definitely surprised...?
Some of these movies are a little high in the list are a questionable. Is there a specific order to this list? For instance, how is Lost in translation is rated higher than Dance with Wolves, or Untouchables. For me these two movies would be much higher on the list the same as Saving Private Ryan, Braveheart. I didn't see Gallipoli, The Dirty Dozen. What are the guidelines for the list? There is quite a bit of older movies I don't see. Is this out with the old in with the new, or the most polit More

Where are some of the all time classics. The General, Nosferatu. The Empire Strikes Back, in my opinion, isn't even the best Star Wars film. More

RE: The 301 Greatest Movies Of All Time Poll Results Are In
I don't think any Star Wars films should be anywhere near the list, but at least it was the only one of any value which made number one. From the little bits I have seen the list looks very predictable and not very good. Might flick through it at my newsagents. More

What a surprise...
What a cliche and obvious list. C'mon people. Cinema was around before the 70's y'know, and it also exists in more countries than America. I love some of those films in the top 10, but bloody hell. More

Subscribers?
Is there no subscribers cover for this either! At the start of the year Empire kept saying this is the year to be a subscriber... I was expecting freebies like I used to get with the Beano (as a child)! An über smug looking Tom Cruise is about all we've had. More
