Gareth Edwards Will Direct A Star Wars Spin-Off
The Godzilla man is off to a galaxy far, far away...

When your studio filmmaking debut roars at the box office the way that Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla did last weekend, people listen. But even given that success, it's still great to hear that Disney and Lucasfilm have Edwards attached to direct one of the Star Wars spin-offs.

It’s not yet clear which of the potential spin-offs the companies want him to tackle, and indeed no-one at the Mouse House has even confirmed which characters might be the focus of the non-trilogy movies. So far, the prime rumours have flowed around Yoda, Han Solo, Boba Fett and even something about Luke Skywalker’s untold adventures.

Said Edwards, courtesy of StarWars.com, "Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life -- join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited and honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm". Hmm, if he's joining the 'Rebel Alliance' is that a clue to the character story he'll be tackling? Or are we reading too much into a fairly jokey remark?

While we do know that at least three spin-offs are planned to keep the Star Wars pipe full between Episodes VII, VIII and IX, everything else about them is a mystery besides the fact that X-Men: Days Of Future Past writer/producer Simon Kinberg and Episode VII co-writer Lawrence Kasdan have been overseeing their development and The Book Of Eli/After Earth's Gary Whitta is specifically on boards to script the film Edwards is set for. Whitta's credits give us pause, but we'll keep our fingers crossed.

Whitta added, "From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to me,so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth, is literally a dream come true. I'm still pinching myself."

Star Wars is yet another feather in Edwards’ cap, coming after the indie success of Monsters and Godzilla’s stomping of the competition. He’s attached to any potential Godzilla sequel – which Warner Bros. and Legendary have already confirmed is in development – but it’s early days for that, with no script in existence just yet. So it’s entirely possible that Edwards could head to a galaxy far, far away before coming back down to Earth for another bout with the big G.

Star Wars: Episode VII, which has just kicked off shooting in Abu Dhabi with J.J. Abrams calling the shots, is out on December 18, 2015. You can bid for a walk-on role in the film via a charity appeal here.

How do you feel about Gareth Edwards tackling a Star Wars spin off?
I couldn't be happier; he's a great filmmaker and deserves this shot!
I'm intrigued! I'd love to see him blend the lo-fi feel of Monsters with Star Wars.
I am Godzilla. I'm a little hurt, tbh. Suddenly we're 'on a break'? I thought we had something.
Given Edwards' feel for monsters, could this be a Rancor origin please?

This is a second dream project for him, and one can only hope he manages to reinvigorate the legacy of this franchise, as he certainly did with Godzilla, which despite several myths circulating that suggest it wasn't awesome, was in fact awesome (as was Monsters). Well done, Mr Edwards, and good luck. More

RE: Noooooo
L: BelfastBoy I don't give a shit about Boba Fett's backstory. Personally, the mystique that grew up around that character has always eluded me. He's a bounty hunter, clearly good at his job, feels the need to hide his face - what else do we need to know? I want the spinoffs to fill in the gaps in between the end of ROTJ and the new episode 7. We're told at least 30 years has passed so what's happened in the intervening period? What does concern me is that this film has a release More

RE: Gareth Edwards Directing A Star Wars Spin-Off
Just been reading that Gary Whitta is a longtime hater and has supposedly been trying to delete his Lucas bashing on some message boards - http://furiousfanboys.com/2014/05/g...e-his-special-edi tion-prequel-bashing-online/ whether it is to hide it from Disney and Lucasfilm or the world at large it pretty much shows us what kind of a character he is for this alone I fear for the first spin off More

L: DONOVAN KURTWOOD Great choice, really excited by this. I think i'm more interested in the spinoff films than the continuation of the existing story. hat is bizarre statement considering we know practically nothing about either film More

RE: Good grief!
L: sunflies I didn't like Monsters or Godzilla. This guys seems to know how to march dislikable characters between the long gaps separating FX shots, masquerading that approach as 'suspenseful' (i.e. 'boring')... And not a lot else that makes a film interesting or enjoyable to me. the two human characters in Monsters were not very memorable, but I liked how showed everything from their point of view and that they weren't heroes who would save the world. as to the vfx, Monster More

I have a bad feelin' about this!
Diddn't like Monsters, didn't like Godzilla.... decent special effects with boring bits inbetween.... If this was what I was after from Star Wars.... I'd re-watch The Phantom Menace..... In my opinion....poor choice. More

RE: Gareth Edwards Directing A Star Wars Spin-Off
This has made me interested in Star Wars again Although I would rather he was directing on the new trilogy films as opposed to a spin-off Nothing against Abrams, but I think the films will work better with a different director for each one (a la the originals) More

RE: Gareth Edwards Directing A Star Wars Spin-Off
Pleased for Edwards as I liked Monsters and Godzilla and he seems keen to do a Star Wars film. Selfishly, though, not being a Star Wars fan its a shame that I'll have to wait a few more years before I get another Edwards film I want to see. This is like Del Toro doing the Hobbit, for me. A waste of talent. More
