First Look At Ben Affleck As Batman, In The Batsuit
With the new Batmobile, courtesy of director Zack Snyder

13 May 2014  |  Written by Helen O'Hara

submit to reddit

Yesterday, Zack Snyder promised us a better look at the Batmobile for Superman Vs. Batman (name TBC), but he's delivered a good bit more than that today, with our first look at the new Batsuit as well.

This looks like something of a return to the traditional sculpted offering rather than the Kevlar plates of Bale's suit (see how those evolved here). But it also has a moody, monochromatic quality that is closer to some of Nolan's films, or the dark animated episodes, rather than - shudder - the '60s TV show. Heck, even the logo isn't coloured. The cape and cowl, however, feel more old-school, and those neat little ears are almost a TV throwback.  And if that's Affleck in the suit, as the chin suggests, somebody's been hitting the gym even more than normal; he looks like the hulking Batman of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns.

Thanks to someone helpfully lifting the shadows and tweaking the contrast, you can see more detail to the suit here, giving you a glimpse of Bat-belt and Bat-gloves. Of course, Snyder may have left the picture dark to cover up unfinished / provisional details, so these may be tweaked before 2016.

The Batmobile itself, meanwhile, also seems like a hybrid of Nolan / Bale's Tumbler and the sleekness of previous incarnations. Is that a huge back wheel, almost obscured by smoke, like a dune buggy? That would be a change. Let us know what you think below.

Superman Vs Batman (or whatever) will hit cinemas on April 29, 2016 over here, also starring Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Diane Lane, Jesse Eisenberg, Amy Adams and Laurence Fishburne.

What was your first thought when you saw Ben Affleck as Batman?
Where are there veins in his batsuit?
I can fix this photo with a bit of contrast adjustment...
This looks seriously cool
This looks pretty good
This looks okay
This looks... like Batman, I guess?
Part-Nolan, part-Burton - I dig it

Its like comparing a beautiful painting to a fart, both can be an enjoyable experience but you dont have to shove your heard up your own arse to get the full benefit of a fart. Batman from the comics
This looks so cool! People are hating the ears but I think they work well with the suit. Also the ears are part of the Hush/dark knight returns comics. It's funny how 'comic book fans' get so uptight when films do something different with a character (man of steel "was not superman") but they love the Nolan films which were very different to the comics yet nobody said anything. This suit looks more like one from the comics than any others we've seen previously which I think is awesome. More

Change
After the hard-hitting Nolan/Bale films isn't it time to revert back to the 60's lighthearted carry on? Instead of Ben Affleck though I'd cast Adam East.....Just for a change of direction! Only messing, the tougher the better but with more humour, please. More

Frank Miller's Dark knight i think!
Zack Snyder really gets Batman, this has potential to be something really special. Hopefully this will be Snyder and Affleck riffing on Miller's Dark knight. I think this will be less preoccupied with being over-realistic, a little bit of realism in a comic book universe goes a long way. I think Affleck will bring knock on wood a more subtle an interesting interpretation of Batman an Bruce Wayne an don't forget Batman does indeed have a bit of dark humour an ironic disregard for the hardened cri More

Snyder = No substance and an altogether crap film!
Apart from Dawn of the Dead, Snyder has not made a good film! (IMO) So why should this be any different?! People need to grow up and stop whinging just because this isn't an exact replica of the specific batman suit that's their favorite. There's nothing wrong with this design, it's Batman. I don't have much hope that the film will be that great, but I can certainly say that this image depicts the Batman. And the Batman is cool. You'd have to do something pretty radical to make the Batman not cool. More

Frank Miller Bruiser
I like it! He looks like the Frank Miller comics - old hulking bruiser that is just sheer power. This is a positive turn. Now that Snyder has the look down all we need to know now is the 'Bat-voice'. Despite my nerd-rage...
...I like it; although it looks like we are going to be getting another moody, dark, miserable 'oh define me, define me' Dawson's Creek superhero film. It looks like the entire Justice League are gonna be on Prozac! This is why I loved the new Spidey film; at least he enjoyed being a superhero. That said I do think this looks the shit!! When do we get a trailer? (its Snyder so we can que up the slow motion with voice over, that person wabbling as a soundtrack and inevitable Inception horn). More

I was happy with the casting of Affleck in the role; however not convinced by Snyder's broody, building smashing Superman film (best scene was at the end when Cavill got to do Clarke Kent properly). The tiny ears and Affleck's chin bring horrible memories of Daredevil back to the surface. Batmen can't look up?
Why did Mr Znyder feel the need to promote the camera he used to take that photo? What's in it for him? Despite the product placement it's not a great photo and it looks as though we've gone back to a Batman costume where the actor (ahem) won't be able to turn his head. I hope this isn't true. Anyway, Man of Steel was pretty awful so I hold out no hope for this. I'm sure this movie will be more toy-friendly than The Dark Knight trilogy so that's the important thing. More
