After exploring dark psychodrama with Prisoners and the upcoming Enemy, director Denis Villeneuve has his eye on science fiction for a future project. He’s attached to adapt short tale Story Of Your Life and he may have found a star, with Amy Adams in early talks.
If she does end up in the film, Adams will star as Dr. Louise Banks, an expert linguist called in by the US government to help when alien craft land on Earth and someone must learn to communicate with the occupants. As she explores their language and mindset, Dr. Banks figures out how to think as they do, developing the ability to "chrono-synclastically" perceive time from the outside. In a nutshell, she's able to "remember" the future, which has implications, since she can see the ultimate fate of her currently unborn daughter, as well as knowing more about the new arrivals’ intentions.
With The Thing’s writer Eric Heisserer on script patrol adapting Ted Chiang’s short story, Villeneuve should be shooting early in 2015, once he finishes his next pic, Sicario.
Adams, meanwhile, will be seen in Lullaby and Tim Burton’s latest, art drama Big Eyes, which doesn’t yet have a release date for here or the US, but is predicted to enter the awards race this year. She’ll also be back as Lois Lane for the still-to-be-titled Man Of Steel follow-up that brings Ben Affleck’s Batman into Zack Snyder’s superhero universe.
