Guardians Of The Galaxy

Happy to trumpet their big successes such as Iron Man 3 but also to admit that The Lone Ranger disappointed at the box office last year, Disney chief Alan Horn emerged with plenty of fanfare to showcase the company’s 2014 slate.

Playing coy as ever with Star Wars: Episode VII, Horn merely parroted the film’s recent press release about the timescale and three new leads joining the old faces before moving on to other things. Prime among them was Marvel, which is about to deliver Captain America: The Winter Soldier to screens and has those Guardians Of The Galaxy ready to follow in August. Nothing particularly new was screened for either, but just when we’d finally kicked the Guardians Of The Galaxy trailer track of Hooked On A Feeling from our heads, there it was again…

Pixar Inside Out

Brushing off the disappointment that Pixar will not be releasing a film this year, Horn debuted footage from Pete Docter’s Inside Out that initially screened in a much more raw form at the company’s D23 event last August. The film, which follows the emotions inside a young girl’s head, shows her becoming upset at her parents during a dinner conversation, and also takes us inside both parents’ brains to show their own anthropomorphic emotions reacting to the situation. It’s a fantastic, original moment and bodes well for the film. With Disney Animation still riding high on the success of Frozen, Horn talked up the department’s next release, Big Hero Six, but had no footage to show.

On the live-action front, we got the latest trailer for Maleficent and then a decent look at Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella. What we saw, with some unfinished effects, was definitely in keeping with the company’s recent fairytale trend, and Helena Bonham Carter appears to be having a blast as the fairy godmother. Oh, and Cate Blanchett’s Wicked Stepmother has a cat on a lead, which apparently is some universal sign for evil.

The Mouse House wrapped things up by bringing out Jon Hamm to introduce Million Dollar Arm, the based-on-a-true-story tale of a sports agent who ran a reality show contest to find Indian youngsters who could become new baseball talents. The film hits US screens on May 16, but doesn’t yet have a UK date. And it almost certainly won’t be called Frozen 2, despite Hamm’s attempts to convince the crowd otherwise.
