First Promo For Earth To Echo
E.T. phones kids

If you put a load of Amblin-era 1980s kids films in a big found-footage pot and boiled them together, you might get something that looks like the trailer for new sci-fi adventure Earth To Echo. Add in a dash Super 8 sheen and serve while still warm to your eyes.

We’re introduced to a group of kids who see themselves as outsiders because they’re the “good” ones – well-behaved, no trouble but never likely to run with the cool crowd. Our heroes are Tuck, Munch and Alex, who are inseparable friends, but their time together is ending. Their neighbourhood is being destroyed by a highway construction project that is forcing their families to move away. But just two days before they must part ways, the boys find a cryptic signal has infected their phones. Convinced something bigger is going on and looking for one final adventure together, they set off to trace the messages to their source and discover something beyond their wildest imaginations: hiding in the darkness is a mysterious being, stranded on Earth, and wanted by the government...

There’s clearly an attempt to bottle the charm of E.T., Batteries Not Included and The Goonies, with Chronicle also on the mind of director Dave Green and his screenwriter Henry Gayden. Can it stand out in a tough summer marketplace? And in a world where superheroes and CG ‘toons seem to rule the box-office roost? We’ll find out on July 25.
