New Stills From The Raid 2
Heads will be caved

We've had trailers and posters for the aggressively anticipated The Raid 2 (not subtitled 'Berandal' in this country), and lest it disappear from our thoughts for too long Sony PIctures Classics has just scattered a handful of new stills online. There are machetes, big sticks, hammers, shotguns, machine guns, vicious looking sickle-type things, and a lot of mud.

And yes, that is Yayan Ruhian, who played the first film's Mad Dog. Head to our trailer breakdown to find out what that's all about...

The Raid 2 picks up the story two hours after The Raid, and sweeps Rama (Iko Uwais) into a much broader world of corruption and violence as he infiltrates the ranks of a ruthless Jakarta crime syndicate. It's looking even more gnarly than its predecessor, if that's possible. Some of us at Empire have even seen it and can testify...

Julie Estelle, Alex Abbad, Mathias Muchus, Tio Pakusadewo, Marsha Timothy, Cecep Arif Rahman, Matsuda Ryuhei, Endo Kenichi and Kitamura Kazuki are all part of the cast for this one, which is, of course, once again directed by Gareth Evans. The Raid 2 received a rapturous reception at its Sundance premiere, and arrives in the UK on April 11.

Your Comments

I think The Raid is overrated. And it's far from universally praised. While it is well directed and shot, it's lacking in the character departments, and it has a basic plot. People need to stop fawning over it just because the action's so awesome. And to the problem with the front covers of Empire, what would you rather see? A picture of upcoming indie films that have no release dates? They could add a few pics of people from films that have big budgets but aren't blockbuster types. The big f More

RE: New Stills From The Raid 2: Berandal
But are they hyping movies or responding to demand? Again, it's all about what people outside core subscribers want to read about. They almost certainly won't give Transformers 4 a very good review, for example, but the internet kids are all over any snippet of information about Transformers that comes out, so as the biggest film mag in the world with the opportunity for great access, they'd be crazy to ignore it. Again, the big shit allows for the smaller shit. They need to be in the business More

Rich - You're absolutely right and I do give Empire my money anyway. It's the fact that I do so by subscription that drives my comments. If, as I suspect is true, it is "(b)" then make the Empire subscribers' covers completely different?ing a bit more "intimate" for us members. I don't know... How about the Coen brothers milking a cow / Scarlett Johansson in her underwear shot from behind with her head turned and sucking a lollipop (now that would be a treat for subscribers) / Tom More

New Stills From The Raid 2: Berandal
If you're wondering why an adult rated niche foreign language movie isn't on the cover then there's no hope. Also your view of 1954s Godzilla only being seen by some weird outdated stereotype group of losers (an important movie in cinema history, never mind being a huge franchise and a household name) is very peculiar. I bet you give Empire your money anyway! More

RE: Why is The Raid 2 not on Empire's front cover this month?
It's clearly b). And it's totally understandable. As a subscriber you've already bought the magazine so the cover is irrelevant, surely? (Don't call me Shirley!). The cover is to get people to buy the magazine off the shelf. Hence all the geek covers and superheroes every month. Because that's what drives the internet, and the internet drives the brand. Loads of people are looking forward to The Raid 2, and it'll totally get covered in the mag, but as an indonesian-language film it's still esse More

Why is The Raid 2 not on Empire's front cover this month?
I carp on about this a lot but will do so again as it never ceases to wind me up! The Raid 2 is the sequel to a 5 star, universally appreciated movie; a movie so good a U.S. remake is being fast-tracked. It also happens to be released at cinemas in April and is directed by an up-and-coming talent that happens to be a Brit. Does it therefore make it onto Empire's cover? Er, no. Instead a movie based on wobbly, black and white Japanese "classics" that none of us (certainly none of us wi More
