After American Hustle and his involvement with as-yet-unproduced projects such as American Sniper and Lance Armstrong pic Red-Blooded American, we get the sneaking suspicion that Bradley Cooper is flicking through lists of potential gigs to find ones with “American” and/or “Blood” in the title. That, you see, would immediately explain why he’s attached to star in American Blood.

Warner Bros. fended off several competitors from film and television to win the rights to Ben Sanders’ book, which follows Marshall Grade, a crooked NYPD officer who won a spot in the witness protection program by becoming a mob informant.

Living under the radar in New Mexico, he’s suddenly pulled into a dangerous investigation, searching for a missing woman. Andrew Sodroski is on board to write the script, though all anyone has seen of the book as yet is a partial manuscript. Still, New Zealand native Sanders comes with the pedigree of a best-selling author and, with American Blood planned as the first of a potential series of novels, Warners must feel there is a possible franchise in the making here.

Cooper, who scored an Oscar nomination for Hustle, has Serena still awaiting release and will be heard as Rocket Racoon in Guardians Of The Galaxy, out August 1 (and if you want to know what he’ll sound like, head here). There’s also Cameron Crowe’s latest, untitled romantic comedy, which hits the US on Christmas Day this year, but does not yet have a confirmed UK release. However he chooses scripts, it seems to be paying off for him, but if Cooper agrees to star in a new American Girl film, then we’ll worry.
