American-Hustle-Scores-At-The-2014-SAG-Awards

Awards season trundled on this weekend as the Screen Actors Guild in the US handed out the trophies in the 20th iteration of its annual ceremony. There were few surprises, and American Hustle walked away with the main ensemble prize for film.

Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto both continued their winning ways, picking up Actor and Supporting Actor respectively for Dallas Buyers Club. McConaughey delivered one of the night’s longer speeches, a rambling paean to performing that led the Leading Actress winner, Blue Jasmine’s Cate Blanchett, to comically grumble when she was given the sign to wrap up her own speech, pointing out that McConaughey had been allowed to talk for longer.

12 Years A Slave's Lupita Nyong’o was a pleasant change from Jennifer Lawrence’s near clean sweep in the Supporting Actress category, and she gave touching thanks to her colleagues and told a funny story about calling her dad to tell him she’d gotten the part and asking if he knew Brad Pitt. “I don’t know him personally,” he’d replied, “but I’m glad you got a job…”

TV-wise, Bryan Cranston lifted his first SAG award for Breaking Bad, while the show’s ensemble also claimed that gong. The Modern Family cast scooped comedy ensemble, with Family’s Ty Burrell as Lead Actor and Julia Louis Dreyfus winning Comedy Actress for Veep. An absent Dame Maggie Smith won the dramatic award for Downton Abbey.
