While pretty much everything about X-Men: Apocalypse, which Brian Singer announced last week, is swirling in a blizzard of rumour and speculation, one or two elements are starting to coalesce even at this relatively early stage of the news feed. Vulture has now learned that Singer will indeed return for directorial duties on the film.
One other interesting nugget the site dug up on the film points to this being a direct sequel to Days Of Future Past, with the new movie set up in the closing moments of that film. But while next year’s mutant outing features a mix of both the First Class era X-Men and the modern day, older equivalents, it seems Apocalypse will once more return the spotlight to James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence and the rest, including whatever timeline shenanigans Future Past wreaks.
Is there still a chance that Patrick Stewart and the modern X-Team could show up in some fashion? Of course! Not a frame of Apocalypse has yet been shot, so everything is up for grabs. And while details about the 2016-targeted film’s big bad have been rumoured online, Singer has been on fact-check patrol, shooting down the idea that the villain is an alien. As for what he is in the comics, you can check out our primer.
X-Men: Days Of Future Past, meanwhile, hits UK cinemas on May 22.
