Though his contributions to Marvel-based movies themselves tend to be limited to fun cameos these days, Stan Lee is still creating characters and content and appears ready to make a more direct impact on the cinema. He’s teaming up with former Marvel Studios boss-turned-regular-Spider-Man-producer Avi Arad for an untitled new movie.
In true Stan fashion, the details are being kept secret for now, with both Lee and Arad staying schtum on any names or titles while talking to The Hollywood Reporter. “Some titles,” Arad tells the trade mag, “give away too much.”
Thanks to Arad’s close connection to Sony, the project is currently set up there, and the next stage is to find a writer. According to Arad, Lee is still pushing the boundaries even though he turns 91 next month. "At the ripe old age of 90, he can still put together magic. He’s as sharp as a Japanese cooking knife. His mind is as young as it used to be."
In related comic book movie news, actor Frank Grillo, who plays Brock Rumlow (AKA Crossbones) in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, has told Crave Online that the scene may well be set for more from his character. “It’s an origin film. You meet people who are going to be around for a while, so they introduce the characters. It’s almost like it’s a series. It’s fun. I can’t say very much about it because Marvel’s very strict about what you’re allowed to say. The movie, we’ve seen bits of it, and it is spectacular.”
Obviously there are several characters introduced in the new film, including the Winter Soldier himself (the cyborg-ised Bucky Barnes, played by Sebastian Stan) and Anthony Mackie’s Falcon, but given Marvel’s usual plans to keep people around, Crossbones might return if he proves popular… Captain America: The Winter Solider is out on March 28 and the most recent trailer is lurking below.
