temple run game movie adaptation

Angry Birds is getting a movie. Assassin's Creed is getting a movie. And now, if a deal with Gravity producer David Heyman, Warner Bros. and game creators Imangi Studios goes through, Temple Run is getting a movie.

Temple Run is, of course, the endless running game that sees an Indiana Jones-a-like explorer who's just stolen an idol from a jungle temple pegging it away from evil beasties at a brisk pace, dodging death traps as he hoovers up gold coins and magical power-ups.

If it sounds a bit too far fetched - and a little bit too much like the beginning of Raiders - fret not, because there won't be any power-ups in the film. At least, we hope not.

The original game was released in 2011, quickly becoming a phenomenon as bored commuters, excitable kids and fans of a good game got hooked, and soon it was at the top of the iTunes free game charts, using the freemium model where the game was free to download but in-game add-ons were paid for to earn its way in the world. Spin-offs such as Temple Run: Brave and Temple Run: Oz followed in its wake, and copycats tried to cash-in with Temple Guns, Temple Jump and Pyramid Run.

Game studio Naughty Dog and their Uncharted team must now be figuring out whether they can get their own Indy wannabe, Nathan Drake, to cinemas sooner rather than later. No release date is earmarked for the Temple Run project, but considering the franchise traffic jam that's hitting 2015, sometime in 2016 or later is probably a safe bet.

Doubly ironic...
...considering Temple Run is a thinly disguised rip-off of both Indiana Jones and Uncharted. More
