Rupert Sanders Directing Napoleon
Warner Bros. wants a new biopic

Napoleon Bonaparte is one of those historical figures that filmmakers just can’t resist. Stanley Kubrick was famously obsessed with making a film about him, and even in the last few years, a number of projects have popped up in development, though none actually reached the screen. Warner Bros. is hoping that Snow White And The Huntsman’s Rupert Sanders can finally make one happen.

The script for what promises to be a sprawling biopic comes from Jeremy Doner. He, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is taking a Scarface approach and charting Bonaparte’s rise to power through a series of revolutions, eventually becoming Emperor of France. His strategic genius and lust for power were such that he even attempted to invade Russia - the most famous of the classic blunders. The Battle of Waterloo would, of course, prove to be his downfall, and he lived out his years in exile on the island of St Helena.

300 producer Gianni Nunari is aboard to help shepherd the new film, but it’s still early days so no casting decisions have been taken yet. Sanders has been considering various options since Snow White, including sci-fi story The Juliet, a film based on Frederik Forsyth’s The Kill List and drug war drama 90 Church.
