Open Auditions For Star Wars Episode VII Announced
Or so it seems...

star wars episode vii auditions

Sound the slightly-suspicious-but-still-exciting-Star-Wars-news siren, because a casting call has been announced via twitter for a "Walt Disney Pictures Film" and it sounds very Forceful indeed. Take a read of the message from UK Open Call below, and start imagining who could fill those roles...

The tweet in question reads thusly: "Not long until we start auditions for new Disney movie - Please retweet and get the word out, We're so excited!" So, there's no direct mention of Star Wars, and no definitive proof that this actually has anything to do with Episode VII, but BBC News, not usually the riskiest of sources, is calling it for the franchise.

Assuming it is something to do with J.J. Abrams' take on George Lucas' beloved space opera, let's look at the evidence (which chimes with a previous leaked casting call from earlier in the year).

Seeking young woman to play 17-18 year old. Must be beautiful, smart and athletic. Open to all ethnicities (including bi and multi-racial) Must be over 16.

Rachel - Was quite young when she lost her parents. With no other family, she was forced to make her way in a tough, dangerous town. Now 17, she has become street smart and strong. She is able to take care of herself using humor and guts to get by.  Always a survivor, never a victim, she remains hopeful that she can move away from this harsh existence to a better life. She is always thinking of what she can do to move ahead.

Seeking young man to play 19-23 years old. Must be handsome, smart and athletic. Must be over 18.

Thomas - Has grown up without a father's influence. Without the model of being a man, he doesn't have the strongest sense of himself. Despite this he is smart, capable and shows courage when it is needed. He can appreciate the absurdities in life and understands you can't take life too seriously.

Could the former be the same role Saoirse Ronan auditioned for? Are they using boring names to throw us off the scent? And could the latter be the son of Han Solo, growing up with his dad out buckaneering across the galaxy? Okay, that's a bit of a stretch, but still: so many questions, and absolutely no answers, so speculate away in the comment box below. Star Wars: Episode VII is set for a 2015 release date, and production is set to start early next year here in the UK.

I wonder why…
…the female role specifically welcomes all ethnicities, but the male role doesn't. Guess we should assume he's white & she's "other." The casting notice even makes a point of "including bi and multi-racial," but not white, under the category of all ethnicities. Thanks Disney; without you, how would I ever know my place in the world? — smile More

I heard something about a Star Wars casting call on the BBC news this morning. I wonder if this is what they were referring to? More

Not Star Wars
People seem to be reading too much into this as it doesn't sound like SW to me. Or it may be a cover story to try and not give too much away in detail. More

Hopefully not
As an avid follower of the Expanded Universe material, I hope this is not Star Wars at all. Neither role fits any character I can think of, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Abrams would be a fool to completely disregard the material already out there and go a new direction. And Empire, Han and Leia have two sons, neither of which grow up without a father. Come on. More

I don't think it's for Han Solo's son. Why would he have a British accent? More
