We've been teased on Instagram, but now it's finally here: the trailer for Bryan Singer's return to the X-Men franchise, X-Men: Days Of Future Past. Feast your eyes below, and try to not get over-excited or faint.

Days Of Future Past finds Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Ian McKellen), Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and the current X-team confronting a dark alternate future where mutants are an endangered species, tracked down, imprisoned or killed thanks to Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage)’s Sentinel program and an overwhelming level of distrust aimed at them from regular humans.

They boldly plan to send Wolverine’s consciousness back in time to the First Class era (or a few years after we last met those versions of the characters) to convince the younger Professor X (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and the rest to work together to stop the threat at its source.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past opens on May 22 next year, and you can find out more about it thanks to our exclusive on-set report in this month's issue of Empire, out this Thursday. And if this trailer is making you feel nostalgic about your favourite X-Men characters, be sure to click this way...

Which character are you most excited about seeing more of in X-Men: Days Of Future Past?

Older Erik Lehnsherr / Magneto

I'm only here for the newcomers - Blink! Bishop! Warpath! Quicksilver! Richard Nixon!

What if it was good.
X-men Days of Future Past. The trailer is cool and well done. I did get goosebumps and I hope it will be good. I really don't want it to suck. I'm worried it may, but I really don't want it to. Wouldn't it be amazing if it was hands down awesome! What if it perfectly brings together three series of X-men movies into one perfectly balanced epic. I know Kenneth Branagh isn't working on it but it's still possible. What if the fans of the films, the comics and the series unanimously agreed that it w More

Good to see Bishop in there. He is a very pivotal character in the DOFP storyline. The guy they got to play him looks just like him! More

RE: I'm Not Interested
L: bb Wolverine has become a VERY over-used character in the X-MEN films, and I am not going to see this film at all.as directing this film, I would have used Kitty Pryde instead and told the executives from both Fox and Marvel to go and f*** themselves I've lost all respect for Bryan Singer (he's become a victim of his own success). nd Fox would then replace you as director. Very good trailer which makes me very interested in the film, despite being a little disappointed with F More

Music sound is good.. that's about it.
They should have let Vaughn do his thing. Singer looks like he has just ruined it - 20th Century Avengers Fox. Cynical? me? More

John Murphy's music is so overused I reckon I could video the dog taking a shit, put this to it and you'd all have doggy doody goosebumps. Film looks good though. More

The music in the second half isn't from Inception...

Loooks good but...
...Will they explain why young Eric started speaking in an irish accent when he put on the Magneto helmet and why Prof X is able to walk again when he visits Jean Grey for the first time in the 80s? More

Considering it's the same footage from Comic-Con...
...I still would have liked to have seen the same track as Comic-Con, in the form of Hans Zimmer's 'Time'. But that isn't to take anything away from John Murphy's 'Adagio in D Minor' which we get here, which I guess works equally well. No doubt a fan will re-edit it to how it originally was. It's also a shame John Ottman is scoring the film itself - it means Henry Jackman's brilliant Magneto theme from First Class will be no more! More

RE: Those new mutant characters ...
I thought it was a well put together trailer. Set the tone for the movie as opposed to showing the whole story. Like that this seemed character driven over effects, but I imagine they'll over compensate with the next one. More

Excited...?
I am just hoping that there isn't too much of Storm or Rogue. I loved them both so much in the comics and watching the old cartoon series, and then in the films they weren't half as good at all. I am keen to see how this whole film pans out and what is going on with the young Magneto/Xavier as this trailer suggests they may be in a spot of bother! More

RE: Dat music
The second piece of music is from inception. I fine track indeed. What I respect about this trailer, is how they have not thrown any big visual effects shots in. This might be due to the fact that none of them are done yet, but i like to believe that it was on purpose. In post, the trailer shots are the first to be made, as they are the first to be shown. Sometimes they are unfinished, sometimes they change completely for the theatrical version. We can see a few effects shots and set repla More

RE:
I'm not going to dwell on the changes from the comic (which is my favourite X-Men story of all) as I understand why they've went with sending Logan back instead of Kitty since he is the star and a much better known character - and thematically Logan helping young Xavier turns their relationship full circle. Will be disappointing if we get little of Ellen Page because of this tho, she is a brilliant actress. Good to see Rogue back as well. Enough in the trailer to entice then and we st More

Re:*shivers*
totally agree, this film will be legendary, anyone who says there are to many people in this film, well the fact that they each had time in the trailer shows that Singer knows how the balance these, what I also love about this trailer is the true treat is still slightly hidden More

I could not disagree more!
This trailer looks pretty drab and is only saved by a pretty cool background track. First Class was rubbish and I don't hold out much hope for this either. Sorry to be so negative but there you have it. More
