Benedict Cumberbatch Linked To Star Wars: Episode VII
As Star Wars Rumour Control continues apace

It’s been a little while since we’ve had to break out the ol’ Star Wars Rumour Alert Klaxon, but it’s howling away at Empire Towers as yet another sketchy piece of proto-casting arrives for Episode VII. This time around, the subject is the not-very-surprising connection between the new SW film and one Benedict Cumberbatch.

According to a site called Film Chronicles, which cites no actual sources, Sherlock is said to be all but announced as playing… something in J.J. Abrams and writer Michael Arndt’s take on the space opera.

Naturally, there has been no official confirmation or release about anything, so this one lives strictly in Rumour-Space for now. But let’s be honest: it’s hardly the most surprising piece of speculation, given Cumberbatch’s appeal right now, his past working for Abrams on Star Trek Into Darkness and his seeming willingness to pop up in giant genre films (see the aforementioned Trek and his twin gigs on the Hobbit trilogy). There's also the fact he dropped out of Guillermo del Toro's haunted house drama Crimson Peak with no apparent schedule clash.

So while only those within Team Star Wars know for sure at the moment, Cumberbatch’s involvement remains in the Schrödinger's Cat department. Likewise Alex Pettyfer and Rachel Hurd-Wood, who have been mooted recently…

Say, though, that ol’ Cumbers were to be cast. Who would you have him play? Sneering Sith? Heroic Jedi? Son of Solo? We want your views…

my thoughts
I have a few thoughts on who cumberbatch could play. first of all the military commander. the second possibility is an older brother figure to the protagonist. I'm predicting at the protagonist will be Luke's daughter. I'm also predicting that Luke will die. after that he can become the older brother figure for Luke's daughter. he could be Han and Leia is child, an older cousin to Luke's daughter. maybe Luke's daughter feels closer to him then to her own father. BC should be in Star Wars but not as a villain
Using some of the character traits from his Sherlock BC would make an excellent and unique good guy, kind of like Han Solo, intelligent, cocky, and arrogant but well meaning. If he gets type cast as a villainous Sith, it would basically be Khan all over again. J.J is too intelligent to cast BC in the same sort of role twice, as he knows he is an extremely versatile actor who can play any number of different roles. More

RE:
There won't be a Thrawn. No Jacen, Jaina or Anakin Solo. No Ben Skywalker. No Darth Caedus. None of the EU characters. There can't be, think about the implications of using the EU characters for a minute, or even just their names, and you'll figure out why. http://screenrant.com/star-wars-episodes-7-9-trilogy/ http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/news/sorry-timothy-zah n-fans-the-new-star-wars-movies-wont-be-using-his-stuff -nadam.php http://www.slashfilm.com/lawrence-kasdan-says-h More

makes me feel dirty
Once you have been in a STAR TREK film you have burnt your bridges and shouldn't be allowed to contaminate the STAR WARS universe!! (That said he would be an awsome sith lord) More

Jedi please
I know it's cliched but Cumberbatch as a villain in a "Star film would be too similar to KHAAAAAN! He'd make a good Solo-ish character too, with the whole looks and charisma that win him his female following More

Jedi role gets my vote
Since he was so good in Star Trek into Darkness as a baddy, I can easily see him as a wicked Sith Lord, but don't want him to do anything too similar to Star Trek - just see the arguments and disparaging remarks about him being typecast and whatnot already. Reckon he could make a very interesting Jedi Master... More
