Jose Pablo Cantillo and director Neill Blomkamp have form together, since Cantillo is on screens now as Sandro in the District 9 director’s latest sci-fi film Elysium. So it’s not shocking to learn that the actor has scored a role in Blomkamp’s new project, Chappie.
Blomkamp regular Sharlto Copley is already aboard to voice the title character, an advanced robot designed for law enforcement that is stolen by two gangsters (Die Antwoord’s Ninja and Yolandi Visser) for their own criminal ends.
Cantillo’s playing a fellow criminal named Yankie who also has plans for the stolen machine. Blomkamp’s in pre-production on the film now, and plans to kick off shooting in Johannesburg later this year. Blomkamp and Copley stopped by our Pod-booth recently, and you can listen to their entertaining chat below.
As for Cantillo, he’ll next show up in psychic thriller Solace alongside Colin Farrell and Anthony Hopkins, and has also been seen on the small screen playing one of David Morrissey’s supporters in The Walking Dead.
