Len Wiseman Ditches The Mummy
Director departs Universal reboot

That strange, strangled moaning noise you can hear is the sound of a mummy hunting a director. Len Wiseman, the man who'd been charged with steering Universal's Mummy reboot, is no longer that man. He's departed the project due to scheduling issues, leaving Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman on the hunt for a new director.

Aptly, it's The Wrap that's broken the news. Wiseman originally signed up for directing duties in the tail-end of last year, but despite (or maybe because of) his experience rebooting the thunderously mediocre Total Recall, this one hasn't worked out and he's off to pastures new.

The new new Mummy, penned by Prometheus co-writer Jon Spaihts, promises a more science-based, Michael Crichton-y take on the great Universal monster. Wiseman himself characterised it as “a darker twist on the material, a scarier version” when he was talking about the project last year. That brave new direction should keep things fresh for the next man or woman in the hot seat.

Producers Sean Daniels, Kurtzman and Orci are looking for a new director, but in which crypt, lair or dungeon should they start the search?
