Christian Bale's Hanging Up His Bat-Cape
No more Bruce Wayne for him

02 July 2013  |  Written by James White  |  Source: Entertainment Weekly

The Dark Knight Rises

This will probably not come as much of a surprise to, well, anyone who has heard or read Christian Bale talk about his possible future as Bruce Wayne. But he’s gone on the record again to reiterate his position: no Chris Nolan, no Bat-Bale.

“We were incredibly fortunate to get to make three Batman films. That’s enough. Let’s not get greedy,” Bale tells EW. “Chris Nolan always said he wanted to make it one film at a time. And we ended up sitting there looking at each other, saying ‘We’re about to make the third.’ We never really knew if we were going to get to be there, but if that was how it was going to be, this was where it should end as well.”

As for any likely Justice League film, we’d best get used to another occupant in the cowl. “I have no information, no knowledge about anything. I’ve literally not had a conversation with a living soul. I understand that they may be making a Justice League movie, that’s it.

“It’s a torch that should be handed from one actor to another. So I enjoy looking forward to what somebody else will come up with.”

So there you have it, once more laid out in black and white. Bale has been keeping himself busy working on plenty of projects, including Terrence Malick’s Knight Of Cups and other, untitled film, plus David O. Russell’s American Hustle and crime thriller Out Of The Furnace, which hits here on November 29.

To relive the high points of Nolan and Bale's mighty Bat-trilogy head over to our huge Dark Knight celebration.

If they want to continue Justice League on from the Dark Knight trilogy Joseph Gorden-Levitt would be a good choice for the next Batman. In the comic books Robin (Dick Grayson's Robin that is) took over as Batman twice for Bruce Wayne, including an instance when everyone believed Bruce Wayne to be dead as in the film. At the end of the Dark Knight Rises Bruce Wayne already left Robin in possession of the Batman suit, it would be a natural progression really... More

RE: Christian Bale's Hanging Up His Bat-Cape
A few thoughts: - To those wanting a younger Batman, think a bit harder or check your facts. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Jon Hamm are both older than Christian Bale. (NKW is 43 at the end of this month, Hamm is 42). Does Hamm even want to be a huge film star? Surely, if he did, he would've cashed in on his Mad Men status with something more substantial than Bridesmaids or that other film with most of the same cast (Friends With Kids, was that it?). - The suggestion of Joe Manganiello for More

I get what Jobloffski is saying and agree with it for the most part but that would suggest the studio would choose artistic integrity over the $$$. Surely Bale is to DC what Downey Jr is to Marvel. They would be stupid not to cash in on that Trilogy's success. JLA will make a lot of money, but with Nolan and Bale attached it would make a fuck ton of money !! JGL wouldn't be Nightwing in any (theoretical) continuation of Nolan continuity. The entire story of the trilogy is about creating an everlasting symbol that is more than just a man, a legend. As a man, Bruce wayne can be killed. As a symbol he can be everlasting. That doesn't mean just ending up with a statue, that means that if Gotham goes bad again, JGL, having been coached by Bruce Wayne TDKR would put on the BATMAN costume, having been specifically told by Wayne during TDKR that More

End of an era?
I think 3 is enough for Bale and Nolan. I thought Batman Begins was a superb movie, though I thought the two sequels were okay but overrated by the media. They were enjoyable, but lacked the wit and intelligence of BB. But again that is why origin stories are usually the most interesting. I do hope they leave it for a good 10 years or so before the reboot Batman, but then again the reboot of Spiderman was quite good and it hasn't seemed to harm it at all. Rightly so
Nolan and Bale's Batman doesn't fit into a universe with super powered people. Besides Christian Bale's smart enough actor to see the Dark Knight trilogy closed the chapter on Batman. To put batman in a JL film they'll have to come up with a different version of Batman and different actor. If Warner/DC knew what they were doing, they would try to do good films and not crap that needs the reboot every couple of years to pretend it never existed More

Why Not Do a Nightwing film?
Given what happened at the end of The Dark Knight Rises, why not have a Nightwing movie instead. I will admit I am not comic book expert, but from what I do know five characters had the Nightwing mantle (Dick Grayson/The original Robin) being one of them. So it would be easy to incorporate the character into the whole "Batman in the real world" idea that Nolan created. More

Mixed feelings
The Nolan Trilogy was Nolan's take on Batman - which might I add was awesome. As someone else wrote here, the JLA Batman would be a different beast. Nolan wrapped his trilogy up very well - although I would love to see another trilogy with JGL taking up the mantle of the bat with Bale eventually returning and JGL becoming Nightwing. I kind of think that if Bale returned as Batman for JLA it may taint the other Bat-movies in some way. Although this may be because I'm not the greatest fan of the J More
