Shailene Woodley's Mary Jane Watson Not Appearing In The Amazing Spider-Man 2
She's held back for the third instalment

Shailene Woodley's Mary Jane Watson Not Appearing In Spider-Man 2

Surprising news from Camp Spidey, with Entertainment Weekly reporting that Shailene Woodley's Mary Jane Watson has been cut from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. In what can best be described as a 'Terrence Malick moment', Peter Parker's friend and future love interest has been left on the cutting room floor in the second instalment and will instead make her debut in part 3.

The news comes soon after Sony locked The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4 onto its schedule for 2016 and 2018 respectively, and is a slightly surprising turns of events. All expectation was for Mary Jane to be debuted, albeit in a small role, next year, prior to a subtantially beefier role when you-know-what happens to you-know-who.

Sanguine but disappointed, Woodley is staying philosophical. "Of course I'm bummed, but I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason... Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film."

It's a blow for the young actress, so impressive in The Descendants, but she's toplining an adaptation of young adult sci-fi yarn Divergent and will, of course, be a major player in The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

Director Marc Webb offered greater explanation of the decision. "I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship. Shailene is an incredibly talented actress", he added, "and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her".

With Woodley back on the bench for this one, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are reuniting, with Paul Giamatti, Dan DeHaan, Jamie Foxx, Sally Field, Martin Sheen, Marton Csokas, Felicity Jones, B.J. Novak, Colm Feore and Chris Cooper also appearing. It'll be in UK cinemas on April 18, 2014.

I agree ASM may not be perfect as superhero films go but its a hell of a lot better than them old ones with that guy I can't even remember, Garfield and Stone were perfect, I'm guessing these haters have never read a comic in the life or watched the 90's cartoon in which is just cheese fess (I mean is that not what people love about Spiderman that he doesn't take himself serious) However back to the news, I'm glad M.J is left out and glad to here they are developing the Peter/Gwen story line as More

RE: Shailene Woodley's Mary Jane Watson Not Appearing In The Amazing Spider-Man 2
In my humble opinion, the Raimi trilogy was cack. I thought the Amazing Spider-Man was better than any of those 3. Not a perfect movie by any stretch of the imagination but I thought it got all the characters spot on. And if you-know-what happens to you-know-who as is rumoured, maybe streamlining the story isn't the worst idea in the world. Hopeful. More

"Scenes with Stone and Garfield were cheesy and lamey" Um, hi there... you must be new, let me introduce you to Spider-Man. OF COURSE THEY'RE CHEESY! He's a nervous kid who can't handle himself in conversations with people he finds attractive. They captured that, and the humour elements of Spidey, far better in the new films than they did in the Raimi trilogy More

Sounds like they might be finding it hard to juggle all of the new characters they're introducing. Hopefully dealing with it like this early on will avoid mistakes made in Raimi's last wed slinger gig. More

Didn't see anything special about the 'AMAZING' spiderman vs Tobey Maguire/Sam Raimi version. The Garfield & Stone scenes in particular were SO cheesy and lame...needed a bucket... The fact they are locked in to making 4 of these already smacks of desperation by Sony, and stupidity by Joe Average film-goer. More
