First Trailer For The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug
Meet the elf-made men (and women)...

11 June 2013  |  Written by James White  |  Source: Warner Bros.

When the first teaser poster for The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug hit on Sunday, we were promised that the trailer would be arriving this week. Today is the day and now is the time! Take a look…

Following on from where we left Bilbo (Martin Freeman), the dwarves and Ian McKellen’s Gandalf continue their journey to the Lonely Mountain, where Thorin (Richard Armitage) and the rest seek to reclaim their homeland from a troublesome squatting occupant: Smaug the dragon.

The focus here is more on the new faces we can expect in the second film, including Lee Pace’s Elvenking Thranduil, Evangeline Lily as elf warrior Tauriel, Mikael Persbrandt as shape-changer Beorn, Luke Evans as Bard the Bowman and, just because he can do it without needing big makeup changes, Orlando Bloom’s athletic Legolas.

With plenty of action on show, some nice looks at the new folk and a solid, dramatic reveal (well, after the glimpses in the first film) of Smaug’s reptilian mug (no Cumberchat- yet), this definitely has us ready to see more.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug will finish its journey to our screens on December 13. Then the wait for The Hobbit: There And Back Again, due on December 19, 2014, begins…

Changes for changes sake...
The sight of a Lego box-set of the spider scene with Legolas and Tauriel included worries me... I actually like the way they are exploring the untold story parallel to Bilbo's adventures, but why insert new characters in scenes just for the sake of it? If Legolas and Tauriel are seen around Thranduil's Halls, fine - that doesn't contradict the existing story - it embellishes without change. However, if they rock up and rescue Bilbo and the dwarves, upstaging one of the major emergences of Bilbo' More

Some ropey CGI aside....
....still looking forward to it. Wasn't hugely excited by the Hobbit originally, but was pleasantly surprised. Biggest disapointment was that Azog was CGI and not costume and makeup. Massively reduced his scare levels. Thought Uruks in LOTR were amazing. Now they're just cartoons like everything else. Shame. More

CGI why?
The CGI where Legolas slides under the branch kooks absolutely terrible and very distracting. Too much reliance now on CGI, that was one of the major flaws with Return of the King, too many CGI scenes looked terrible. More

Too much CGI
Agree. This new trilogy looks too much like Harry Potter, Narnia. The original trilogy looked real and magical. More

Shame
Looks like it suffers from the same problems as the first film, too shiny with harry potterish cgi. Lotr trilogy world looked lived in More

RE: legolas
Is it just me or does Lee Pace's Elf look a lot like a cross between Viserys Targaryon (Game Of Thrones) & (Bobby Calisle's) Datak Tarr (Defiance) ? More

SMAUG..!!
SMAUG!! First time I have seen the snakey dragon fck n I think he looks good..I am hoping that it is not just the initial buzzz of seeing the scaly bastard for the first time!! I have to admit the CG eleves chasing the boys in the barrels looked shit and certain other bits were dodge but if that was Beorn trying to get in the door there will be trouble!! Still looking forward to it..roll on Dec!! More

Bad CGI
I do hope that giant dog thing whatever it was trying to bust the door down wasn't supposed to be Beorn, looks more like that dog from the early Harry Potter film than a giant bear. More

RE: Amazing
L: Biggus Too much (hedor my taste but hopefully post-production should sharpen those images up in time for the release date. hose will probably be finished shots! So much of AUJ looked ropey that I don’t think this will be any different. The perfect balance of practical/CG employed in TLotR seem like a distant, distant memory…. More

Jackson + Lucas + greenscreen sets + 'The Hobbit' = 'The Sky Captain' effect
I agree with the dude that made the Lucas comment. My major complaint is the amount that is filmed in front of greenscreen rather than on location or using sets. If you look at Episodes 2 and 3 the backgrounds look completely flat - it takes you out of the film and spoils the scene. This is what Jackson is doing with 'The Hobbit' series. It looks good on your first viewing but once you have time to watch it again you see the faults - you no longer believe in the world presented before you. More

Why they showed Smaug?
I was quite surprised to see Smaug in the trailer. I don't understand why they did that. You don't show your hand, your money shots in a trailer. That's the payoff, the most important enjoyment of watching the whole movie. I think they made a big mistake. More

Cgi seemed fine to me and will no doubt be polished some more over the next few months. Looks like Jackson has had some fun with the barrel sequence - could be one of his best set-pieces. More
