J.J. Abrams Offers Update On Star Wars Episode VII
He's set to start shooting in January

J.J. Abrams

J.J. Abrams – as you might have heard – is the man entrusted with bringing the Star Wars universe back to life for Episode VII. With Star Trek Into Darkness now done, dusted and hoovering up cash in cinemas, he’s made the jump full-time to George Lucas' far away galaxy. We already knew that Abrams and Disney/Lucasfilm planned to shoot the new movie in the franchise’s traditional UK home and, speaking as this past weekend’s Produced By Conference, Abrams says that will start early next year, possibly even January.

That would make sense, as Disney wants to get the movie in cinemas some time in 2015. But the move is weighing on Abrams, who prefers to film in Los Angeles to avoid uprooting his family. Admitting that the idea of moving makes him a little “insane”, he still agreed to the idea: “We are, most likely, if all goes as planned, going to be moving to London at the end of the year.” As for his kids, they’re not best pleased either. "When you're 13 and 14, it's like, f**k that, I don't care what the movie is," he says.

As for how the massive Star Wars fan will approach the new venture, he has one main aim in mind: "It is so massive and so important to people. I think the key to moving forward on something like this is honouring but not revering what came before."

There you go folks: be ready for possible changes and the disturbance in the Force that comes along with it… Those after more on Abrams should seek out Empire's issue about the man, which is still available via the iPad.

Nod
The scene in JJ's Star Trek where Kirk meets Scotty in terms of the music and set is massive nod to The Empire Strikes Back. Hopefully JJ can bring a film quality back to Star Wars and deliver some performances from his actors. More

so what?!
as in 'so what about the lack of real news?' all us star wars geeks devour every little bit of news so come on, we know they'll be no real news till they start shooting. i'm still stupidly excited!! More

Put your feet up
Great ,another filler news item with no news of any substance. So Empire, who is dating who at the moment... we may as well go down that route as well? Or who got a job because they are someone's cousin? Maybe that one is too controversial... More

Script must be good
As long as the script is good I think Abrams will make a good movie, anythings got to be better than episode 1 surely!? Also why's he moaning about moving his kids, why move them at all, if they are 13-14 then I dont think being away from them for 6 months or however long it'll take to make the film will have as massive an impact as moving them to another country will!! Please don't Disneyfy it!
We all know they are kids films but Lucas did it in such a clever way that adults felt like they were watching an epic unfold - not just your standard kid film. I just hope that Disney don't try to push in any of their traditional business model - the unecessary random kid character/storyline. It was clear that Disney had influenece over the production of Iron Man 3 and threw in that random kid. Was it needed? No! Did it push the narrative? No! It almost felt like one of those 70's/80's Dis More

Whatever J.J Abrams does to Episode VII...
...will be A MILLION TIMES MORE THRILLING than ANYTHING George Lucas has done to Star Wars in the last 14 years! I am really curious and - for the first time in years - really looking forward to a new Star Wars movie. More

The weight of expectation
'A' game? JJ will have to make lightning strike twice to make it happen. I hope that lessons from the poorly executed prequels have been learned. All the news buzz is fun but what happens is that it raises expectation to a point that is more often than not only going to be a huge let down. Prometheus is a good modern example where a franchise is revisited and the new product is completely underwhelming. I remember being excited about it like everyone else but the hype created by the Intern More

The Force is not strong with this one...
With the amount of build that Star Wars Episode 7 will receive until 2015 the film itself can really only be a disappointment. Maybe we will be proved wrong and I hope we are, but there is far too much expectation for fans of the original trilogy. At the end of the day this is all about making money for Disneys newly acquired 'Cash Cow'. Lets face it, the story concluded perfectly at the end of 'ROTJ' do we need the memory of Star Wars sullied further? More

Oh come now
Obviously we'll hear about every little tidbit on this project on the Empire site, it's what this site does! I appreciate that there's a 'forced' element of buzz on this film but naysaying is even more easy to jump onto. JJ has actually done wonders with Trek, especially with the superbly crafted first film. Clearly the man will have to bring his A-Game to Star Wars. Personally I'm hoping we'll get some cracking sci fi from this new set of films, at this stage it's difficult to ask for more than More

RE: Not news...
I'm a lifelong Star Wars fan, but not remotely excited about any of this anymore . JJ making the next Star Wars is worrying, I think is Star Trek movies have been completely dire! More

Not news...
If you couldn't care less why is your username Darthmhall?? And why are you commenting?? Huh? This is not really news. What have we learned? Not a great deal. Empire obviously feel that they need to report on the story too although to call it a story would be stretching it a little. This is the journalistic equivalent of treading water... More
