After putting his explosive toys away for Anonymous and limiting himself (at least compared to his past destructo-ventures) with the upcoming action thriller White House Down, Roland Emmerich appears to be getting back into the alien invasion business. And no, for once we don’t mean the Independence Day sequels. He’s just snatched sci-fi pitch Emergence from writer Nic Kelman.
The exact plot details for this one are being kept secret, but apparently it focuses on “hot button science elements.” Could that mean artificial intelligence? Something emerging from a wormhole? The Large Hadron Collider? What's hot in science right now?
Chances are we’ll have to wait and see, because it’s still just a pitch and Emmerich hasn’t set it up with a studio yet. Kelman is busy writing other things, so the script will have to wait.
It’s not like the master of disaster's development drawer isn’t full of projects anyway: he’s developing another high concept tent pole in Singularity. There is also the much-mooted return to the world of Independence Day and his long-gestating plan to film Isaac Asimov’s Foundation - another ambitious sci-fi idea. White House Down will be out on September 6.
