Here’s a potential combination of movie elements that has us intrigued and possibly very excited: an original script, Ichi The Killer director Takashi Miike making his English-language debut and Tom Hardy as the likely star. We're eagerly anticipating The Outsider.
Hardy is aboard to star in the film, based on an idea by John Linson developed with writer Andrew Baldwin and producer Joel Silver. The plot is apparently an epic set in post-World War II Japan where a former American GI sinks into the murky world of the Japanese yakuza.
Miike is in negotiations to direct, and the project, which had been bubbling over at Warner Bros. (where Silver’s production company was based until recently), is now being funded independently. Assuming everything comes together – and we hope it does – The Outsider should be filming next year.
Hardy’s as in demand as ever at the moment, with rumours still circling that he’ll take on playing Elton John in Rocketman. He’s most recently worked on Steven Knight’s Locke and Animal Rescue alongside Noomi Rapace. Next up, he’ll move on to Child 44, which sees him reuniting with Rapace. And lest we forget, Mad Max: Fury Road is still driving through post-production, looking to emerge next year.
